“Fantastic fun”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

Whilst Nanjing Road comes alive at night, be sure to get out in the morning to watch the local dancing in the streets. The shops don't open until about 10 but you can grab a good breakie and coffee and just walk.

“More Western than Chinese.......”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

Jade and gold shops wonderful and very expensive. Otherwise could be in any large western city. For taste of "Made in China" in all its glory, visit Yu Yuan Garden district .

“Lace and fabric?”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

I read from one Shanghai travel blog about this famous road and saw lovely photos of lace and fabric shops which could be found here. However, I walked up and down and couldn't see any last week. One lady told me they've moved. Not sure whether I was in the wrong place or they've really moved.
Anyway, it was quite an experience to see the huge moving crowds. To cross the road, you've to carefully blend yourself into the on-going flow, some fun too.

“No longer a safe place”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

This is my third time here. I used to consider this place a must see.... but, from one end of the road to the other, people will constantly offer you "lady massages" It is disgusting.

Ignore the people who prey on you and they keep following you. Larger groups of people work together to try and get you to join them or to take you to "fun places" If you do, you will be robbed. Traditionally the people are very quiet and reserved. They do not talk to strangers but here is a different story. You will be robbed. Read the warnings at your hotel about these scams. You can find it on most desks that have brochures of what your hotel has to offer and what is around the neighbourhood. Be sure to read it.

Trust nobody and accept no offers of help. Nanjing Road was a great place to visit but it has been taken over and the police do nothing to move these people along. Keep valuables close to you and beware of pick pockets.

Do not travel alone. You will be the first person people will pick on.

“Pedestrian walk”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

OMG, what an energy-filled area! Well worth the time to walk it. And don't miss the Apple store. It was wall-to-wall people the day we were there. There's a huge variety of shops and cafes with almost anything you could want to eat or buy. But, mostly, it's just an interesting place to stroll and people watch. Definitely fun for any age for a short time.
