“Worth a visit”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

Other reviews say this street is crowded - well of course it is, you are in Shanghai! If you don't like crowds, don't go to China.
Nanjing is a huge pedestrian mall filled with shops and eateries. Yes, some of the shops are expensive, but most aren't, at least not by western standards. Stroll down the alley ways that run off it, see how the locals live and the shops they run.
It has a buzz happening all of it's own, and is definitely worth exploring. Our teenage kids thought it was a lot of fun. There are people trying to sell you watches etc, but if you are not interested, they generally take no for an answer.
Loads of restaurants for you to choose from, including McDonalds and KFC if you fancy a change from chinese food. But give some of the eateries a go, they are cheap and full of locals, a great experience.
There are a couple of bars in the midddle which are nice to sit in, have a drink and watch the world go by. Get your breath back and then head back out amongst it again!

“Carried along in a river of people!”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

We visited here during Golden Week, early October. It was amazing to see so many people. Yes there are street sellers but they weren't pushy, A polite 'no' or wave of the hand was enough to get rid of them. It is not a place for bargain shopping as there are all the global branded stores here with prices to match. The choice of food is endless, quality restaurants in the hotels, familiar fast food outlets, Chinese cafes and street food abound. If you are looking for a quieter and maybe more relaxed stroll the walk the streets that run parallel to Nanjing Lu. What ever you decide it's well worth a visit.

“Huge crowds, expensive”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

I thought this would be a place for some great budget shopping. I was so wrong. It was way too crowded and the shops were equally expensive as other malls. There are trains that take you from one end of the street to the other and back. In hindsight, that might have been better as we could have been safe from the jostling crowds.

There are so many peddlers. For almost 30 minutes, we were chased by a girl on skates who wanted us to buy a pair of skates- she just would not take a no for an answer. She started with a price of 130 RMB for a pair and was willing to give 2 pairs for 30RMB, while all the time we kept telling her we weren't interested in the slightest bit. Then there were two people who wanted to take us to shops in one of the alleyways for the fake goods. We did follow one of them to check out the stuff and found that it was way too overpriced than the real goods!

As for the food joints, though they are numerous, the long lines and crowds make it impossible to get some decent food in time. This is a good place for people watching.

Shanghai's 'Times Square' is very crowded at night. This road is jampacked with Chinese youths, tourists, annoying pimps and pushy prostitutes. Wow factor deficient.
