“Once to be there”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

Really enjoyable! Good service, good food, just perfect.
Much better than the one German, well known, in Xintandi.
I would recommend to everyone to go there at least once.
This Sino-German Bier Stube has to be mentioned as THE German restaurant in Shanghai.
Prices are reasonable and the quantity is accurate.
As French, I only say to our German friends “Hutab” I hope the writing is correct.
Many thanks to Papa’s to make feel comfortable.
I shall return soon.

“Genuine German Fare in the middle of Shanghai”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

Of the several German food establishments I visited in Shanghai, this definitely has the most authentic-tasting food. Between the sausages, the Cordon Bleu, and the Sauerkraut, it tasted real although the Sauerkraut could have been a bit more sour, at least for my taste. They also have a great selection of beers and they know how to serve it at the right temperature and with the right glass. The only aspect that wasn't totally German was the decor which was more reminiscent of an American sports bar. But since the food and the beer was real, I am happy to overlook the lacks of atmosphere.

“Pleasant setting, good food/beer”
Reviewed June 28, 2013 via mobile

Nice setting, on a pedestrian street that cuts between Hongmei Rd and Hongxu Rd. Broad menu of German specialties, many of which feature "house-made" ingredients, a parallel to the beer they brew on site.

Ample seating indoors and out and a nonsmoking section upstairs.

“German beer and food”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

In need of some German food and beer? This is the place to be. Huge selection of German lagers and good selection of German (meat) plates that go wel with your half liter weissen beer. All typical German plates are served. Also fun to watch the chinese experience German food......

“Daddy's beer room”
Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

Among the German pubs/restaurants in Shanghai, Papa's can be counted as a genuine one. That doesn't mean though that I like the food very much. On my last visit I had a classical pub dish, meat loaf with fried potatoes ( Bratkartoffeln, not fries) and fried eggs. It gave me enough salt and grease to last me a week. It was just not good. Of course it could be seen as a marketing tool for the excellent Pils on tab. They have Radeberger as well as König Pilsner (Köpi, 'das König der Biere' --- sorry for the brand advertising, but the slogan is a stroke of genius, and the stuff is excellent).
My suggestion: go for the beer and don't eat anything but the snacks, like the pretzels. Have your dinner elsewhere and the drinks here afterwards. Specially on a nice warm evening sitting outside...
