Beautiful tower, beautiful sights but it was just way too overcrowded for my liking. Plenty of people sitting on the sides when you get up to the main observatory that it's hard to even get to the window to snap a photo. Very long wait to get up. However, the upper level glass floor skydeck definitely compensates for the crowd and should not be missed.
I'd recommend going across to Shanghai World Financial Center's observatory. A much better experience overall: plenty of historical briefing of Shanghai, an awesome experience within the building and far less crowds. The view is higher and there's a restaurant on the lower level to enjoy a few beverages after. However, Oriental Pearl is one of those 'must-dos', so maybe check out both if you've got the time - and the patience.
