“The place to go.”
Reviewed June 13, 2014

This area of Shanghai is where all people go, tourists and Chinese. It shows clearly the difference of the old and the new parts of the city from one spot.

“Shame it was misty and raining”
Reviewed June 13, 2014

Had the weather been good it would have been a lovely area to walk, and maybe take a boat and see the area from the water.

The Bund (or Wai Tan as it is locally known) is the grand centre of Colonial architecture in Shanghai and runs along the waterfront of the Huangpu River, facing the Pudong district lined with famous hotels. The word 'Bund' is of Indian derivation meaning 'embankment' but generally it is an embankment or an embanked quay, often providing a promenade.

When foreign powers entered Shanghai after the Opium Wars of the 19th century, the Bund quickly became the center of Shanghai as Western traders built banks, trading houses and consulates along its length.

To me Shanghai, Hu for short, is the 'New York' of China and the Bund a 'must not miss' attraction.
