The Shanghai Museum is truly the best museum on the mainland, having a far superior collection than that offered in the Forbidden City and other venues in Beijing. One could only wonder how much greater the museum would be if many of the best of China's ancient treasures were not removed to Taipei by Chiang Kai-Shek and now showing at the National Museum there.

Still what remains is an impressive collection and one worth a few hours of any trip to Shanghai. The PuDong represents the new Shanghai and new China. This museum will give you an idea of the majesty of the old. It is very convenient by taxi or subway and worth at least a three or four hour tour, provided your schedule permits. For me, after the Bund and Pudong, shopping (of course - the best in China), and along with the Yu Yuan Gardens, the Shanghai Museum is a must-do.

There is so much to see at this museum. Everything from pottery to jade to calligraphy to clothing. We spent several hours walking around and taking it all in. Best of all, there is no charge for this museum.

Lots of Chinese history. This museum is worth the trip because they have a bigger variety of historical content than other Chinese museums … It goes into quite a bit of detail … what I enjoy most in my discovery is the many different types of people who live in China! Very interesting and also educational because I start to realise not all Chinese people are the same … they would come from different parts with a whole different culture altogether. Pardon my ignorance but sometimes I do unconsciously assume that Chinese are from the same place!

The content is rich and certainly worth your time to visit … it's a huge place so do be prepared you may be there at least for 2 hours.

Shanghai Museum is a must for those who want to increase their knowledge about China. It is found near People's Square and can easily be reached by either taxi or subway. We came there at about 9.30 a.m and the queue was quite long. The museum has several floors and more than 4 hours were needed to visit. Throughout the various exhibits like pottery , sculptures, writings, money , furniture, we learned a lot about the different Chinese dynasties.Tourists need to be very careful about their personal belongings .One local young girl tried to open my packback while queueing in the ladies' toilet (where there are no video cameras) . We netherverless had a great time there.

I found both the architecture of this museum and its collections to be truly magnificent. The museum has only been at its current site since 1996 and was built according to traditional Chinese philosophy and beliefs. The museum houses works of art that are internationally renowned. The collections date back 3000-5000 years and you will see jade, furniture, paintings, porcelain, Ming, bronze, calligraphy, and sculpture - it is clearly a museum for ancient art and artifacts. It is not a large museum - which I think is a benefit. It was wonderful to be able to see all of the galleries and really spend the time to appreciate the individual pieces. For me, this is a "must see" in Shanghai.
