Get there early (1) to find the place when you come out of one of People's Square metro station's many exits and (2) so you won't have to queue too long while waiting to get through security. You can easily spend a full day here if you're interested in works made of bronze, stone, porcelain and jade, as well as ancient paintings and dress (don't expect dinosaurs or interactive science displays). I especially enjoyed the pottery and jade sections, amazed at the intricate detail of some of these artistic treasures. When I went there was a special exhibition of Faberge's creations, including 4 rare Easter eggs (the only disappointment was that photos weren't permitted).

A bright new building. Exceptional collections exquisitely displayed. There was almost too much to see on one visit. We went on a Monday and waited only a couple of minutes just before noon but at 3 the line-up was down the road and around the corner.

The organization of the museum allows one to focus on ceramics, paintings, minority peoples, etc in discreet exhibits. Displays are well done with English translations. One is very comfortable wandering and you can take photos. Building is interesting and you are located in a nice walking area. Worth a visit to get you grounded in Chinese history and culture in a few hours.

I went on a rainy day. Free entry and not too busy. Many good exhibits especially the jade section. Go to the gift shop after and buy some of your own to take home!
