The Shanghai Art Museum is on the old expo site. Parking can be hard to find, but it's worth it. The building is red and styled like an ancient wine pot - check these out at the Shanghai Museum to see the inspiration. Security is tight, but the wait is worth it. Start at the top and progress down for a chronological look at Shanghai art. If pushed for time and less inspired by the traditional landscapes, just look at the modern masters on the lowest floor. There is one point where the sudden influence of expat Chinese artists returning from Paris had such a profound effect that even now, if you have trawled through all the galleries up to that point, it is a shock. If you like art - go. If you want a slice of Chinese history through art - go. It's cool.

The Shanghai Art Museum is now housed in the former China Pavillion at World Expo park. If you are looking at a map, trying to figure out which side of Pudong, look at the Bund and follow a line south, crossing the river (vs. crossing the river from the Bund north easterly is the World Financial Centre area). The other nearby landmark is the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The building is a marvel, the space is huge and there were many exhibitions on display, offering a myriad of glimpses from historically old/traditional to modern comtemporary. There are numerous cafes for snacks and drinks at all levels of the building, providing a welcome break. Entry is free except for one area which feature special exhibits; when I was there it was the famous long scroll. A definite must-see place when visiting Shanghai. Note: Do not bring your favourite lighter because you will have to throw it in the trash before entering this place.

The Shanghai Art Museum has moved to the China Art Palace, which formerly was the China Pavilion for the 2010 World Expo (China Art Palace, World Expo Park 161 Shangnan Lu near Guozhan Lu, Pudong). We didn't make it to the new venue, mostly because we were told you can't just show up to visit--there is a new online process where you have to get free tickets in advance.

This Art Museum is in a fabulous art deco building and is a really good component of Shanghai's very vibrant art scene. It's housed in the old Race Course Club house (on the ground floor), so the entrance is on the side, not the front. The art is all traditionally Chinese, and entry is free. Very cute museum.
