“Great old hotel in an excellent location!”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

Overall, I can’t really say anything bad about this place. I stayed here for a total of seven nights in two different rooms. It’s a really nice hotel in an excellent and very central location. It is actually a much fancier place than I usually stay in while in China, but it was reasonably priced for the level of quality I received. It’s right in the heart of the city, and very close to most of the things and places you would want to see in Shanghai. The building itself is quite nice, and dates to the 1920’s I believe. The whole hotel has a really cool “old Shanghai” vibe to it that I really enjoyed. Both of the rooms I stayed in were very clean and quite comfortable. My only quip is that the air conditioning didn’t seem to work very well, if at all. Fortunately, the temperatures during my stay were fairly mild, so it didn’t really bother me too much, and I never said anything to the staff about it. Speaking of staff, I don’t know what the other reviews were talking about, as I found the staff to be very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. I have no complaints whatsoever when it comes to service. I mean, they weren’t all totally English fluent (although most spoke some), but this place is in CHINA! I certainly wouldn’t have expected them to speak perfect English, and they were all very nice to me. Like I said, overall I was very happy with the place, and I would definitely stay here again. I’d recommend the place for sure.
As I alluded to above, the location is one of the best things about this hotel, but one thing I’d like to mention is that once again, Hotels.com has screwed up when it comes to the map shown on their website. THE LOCATION SHOWN ON THE HOTELS.COM MAP IS NOT ACCUARTE! The hotel’s actual location is several blocks away! I’ve run in to this problem before with Hotels.com’s maps in China, and I really wish they would get their act together when it comes to their maps. It would be REALLY frustrating to arrive and not be able to find the place. The good news is that Google maps has it accurately depicted as “Pacific Hotel” on West Nanjing road. While I’m on that subject, I’d like to say that another GREAT thing about this hotel is how easy it is to find! Just take the metro from the airport (Line 2), and get off at People’s Square. Follow the signs to exit number 8, come up the stairs, and the hotel is right there across the street and slightly to the right! So nice and easy to find after a long trip! Perfect!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have no windows, so keep this in mind when booking!

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for sharing your detailed feedbacks as well as informative hints following your stay at Pacific Hotel, Shanghai. We feel so grateful to be informed that our service and facility could fit your expectation.

Our time-honored property is one of the renowned buildings along that street and its location is indeed as your mentioned, the heart of this City. With the proximity of the Metro Hub, one may reach almost every angle of Shanghai. We also noticed you mentioned that the AC in the guestroom did not work well. This issue has been well noted and forwarded to related department to prevent similar problems from reoccurring.

We hope you had a pleasant stay with us and the service team of Pacific Hotel, Shanghai will look forward to welcome you back in not too distant future.

Warmest Regards,

Director Sales

We were in Pacific hotel in F1 weekend so it was fully booked and there were noice in the hallways and rooms had thin walls. And housekeeping staff were talking with loud voice in the hallways in the morning and woke us up. Service was good and friendly. Beds were super good and soft especially compared to normal chinese beds. Hotel seemed to be old. I can imagine that it was really high standard hotel 10 or 15 years ago.

The location is great but be careful, they will charge you more to have a view on People square whatever it was said on the booking and confirmed from reservation after. Service is clearly not a 4 stars hotel but more a state own hotel level.
The day we arrived they did some paint on the 2nd floor and in our room, on the 6th floor, our eyes were irritated and we cough all time. They did not apologize but just answered that it is the same in all rooms. Come here with a mask.
Anyway, the hotel has a good character and charms, so bad that the rest is not following!!!!!

I chose the Pacific Hotel for my first visit to Shanghai because of the location: on Nanjing Road, just 1/2 block from pedestrian mall part of Nanjing Road, across the street from People's Park, and across the street from the heart of the Metro system. It was tremendously convenient-- we could walk to the Bund, and all the attractions of People's Park-- the Shanghai Museum, the Urban Planning Exhibition hall, etc. Best of all, we had easy access to the Metro, and Shanghai's public transit system is among the best in the world. The Transportation Card that we bought at Pudong airport on our arrival was the key that we could swipe to use all 13 Metro lines, any bus, ferry, Maglev, and even taxis! Signage in the Metro is excellent and we had no problem finding which trains to take. The stations are large, but the signage for which exits take you to which streets and sightseeing attractions (and all the other signs) are in English as well as Chinese characters. On the Metro trains, the next stations are announced and scrolled on signs in English in addition to Chinese. This made navigating the system a breeze for us.
Moreover, the hotel is located near a host of restaurants of all price levels. We especially enjoyed the less expensive, local restaurants on Huang He Rd. (just around the corner from the hotel.) Dinners were regularly around 60 CNY (about $10) per person. There are also a number of convenience stores on the street behind the hotel, to pick up bottled water and soda (although the hotel provides a few fresh bottles of water free every day, and there are sodas in the room refrigerators, at a price.) There a several banks within steps of the hotel to get local currency. The #20 bus runs right in front of the hotel and in one direction goes directly to the Bund and in the other direction to the shopping along Nanjing Road West.
As for the hotel itself, it is a beautiful example of Shanghai 1910-1920's architecture. Obviously built by and for Europeans, it displays no Chinese architectural style; but it does have gorgeously warm woodwork, and lavishly decorated floors, ceilings and fixtures. The room itself was very clean, equipped with a mini-refrigerator and pot to heat water for tea or whatever else you may have. A motion-detecting light illuminated the closet (nice touch). The room had large flat screen TV (no radio), desk (with plugin for internet), and good lighting, including recessed lighting over each bed. The bathroom was great with good large sink, instant hot water, all-marble walls, bath with shower, and good strong flushing toilet. The beds were very comfortable, with nice soft duvets. The only downside of the room-- and this mattered not at all to us) was that the room had NO view-- we faced a blank wall 10 feet from our window. The very nice sheer curtains hid all that very nicely, thank you.
The housekeeping service was outstanding-- we communicated well despite the language barrier and they were very attentive to our needs. We paid for the optional breakfast in the 8th floor dining area (50 CNY), and it was well worth it. It was a full Western and Chinese breakfast buffet-- eggs, bacon, fruits, yoghurts, pastries, cereals, and drinks for Western tastes, and dumplings, rice, miso, vegetables, noodles, etc. for Chinese tastes. The breakfast room itself was elegant and had great view of People's Park.
The staff were as helpful as possible. My travelmate had injured his foot, and despite language barriers, the bar staff were very prompt in supplying me with bags of ice for his foot every night when we returned to the hotel. As might be expected, most of the staff's English skills were limited, but even the front desk staff spoke limited, but adequate, English.
As noted in other reviews, the hotel lobby is not on the ground floor, but one floor up, and does require guests to walk up the front steps to enter the lobby. We had no problems, and we did not inquire what help there might be for handicapped travelers. We noted that this hotel, although it had its share of Western travelers, seemed to host mostly Chinese travelers (many business travelers?) There is a concierge and business center where internet is available at very small fee (but beware-- this is China, and I had my email password intercepted-- something that may not be unexpected in China).
Overall this was an excellent choice for our week in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Only rooms with a view are in the very front of the building, facing south onto People's Park.

The location of this hotel is fantastic if you are travelling to Shanghai and want to be around the tourist areas.

With Peoples Square just accross the road as well as the Metro entry (8) almost at your doorstep, its easy to get around different locations in Shanghai.

The brightly lit East Nanjing Road is a very short walk away and getting to the Bund is fun when walking along this road. For those who love shopping, out to the left is the large global shopping stores and to the right is the copy brand market (which has many items such as Dr Dre headphones, North Face jackets, ski jacket, jeans etc.

The beds were very comfortable and the size of the rooms are excellent.

If you are looking for an ultra modern hotel with all of the frills and superb service, the Pacific Hotel is not for you. If you are looking for a clean and comfortable hotel that has a history and character, this one would be a good choice. Staying here takes you back to a different time and is a pleasant contrast to moden day Shanghai. The Pacific is an older hotel built in the 1920's. It has been well maintained but not dramatically modernized. I have stayed at the Pacific many times over the past several months and have always considered it a good experience. The rooms are very clean and the beds are comfortable. I prefer the rooms with the hardwood floors since it adds to the historical ambiance. Check-in and check-out is not particularly friendly nor efficient, but the bellmen are generally attentive and eager to help. The location of the hotel is perfect, just across the street from Peoples Square and a short walk away from the hustle and bustle of East Nanjing Road. The breakfast served is good, even by Western standards. To fully appreciate the hotel, you have to overlook some minor inconveniences and enjoy taking a journey back into old Shanghai.

We stayed in this hotel in March 2013 for 3 nights...

Check in was relatively efficient, but then we were handed the room keys and ignored. We figured that we must be expected to find our own way to our rooms, which we did - seemed rather odd that they didn't at least point us in the right direction!
Rooms themselves were OK - large, comfortable and clean, but exceptionally hot - AC didn't work at all, so we had to open windows to cool the room down.

Not much else to say really, apart from the fact that the location is what makes this hotel worth going to - just minutes away from Nanjing road on one side, and the 5 story market a short walk down the road the other way.
No breakfast is included, but we found a Pizza hut a few hundred metres away (go right out the hotel) which served a great breakfast, and a coffee with a free refill for just Y25, so would certainly recommend that.

If you are going for a holiday/hotel experience, skip this place. If you just want a place to rest you head at night and walk to town from, this is ideal as it is very reasonably priced.
