I was at the hotel for a convention and stayed for 4 nights. The location is amazing but the service is average and interior is from 1993.

- Access to everything on Nanjing Road!
- I arrived at nidnight with 3 pieces of luggage and requested the the doorman to arrange for bell hop to deliver the luggage to room. No bellhop ever appeared in the 10 min it took for me to check-in so I had to haul the luggage up myself.
- The rooms are dated a la 1993 and needs updating.
- Service at restaurant was average as the waiters joked around in front of me instead of processing the bill as I had requested.

I usually use this page to compare hotels in a city and felt safe after seeing that in 2013 it received an award of excellence from Tripadvisor (which I also saw at the reception).

This hotel defnitly needs a total renovation and does not justify the price! The bathrooms are really badly mantained, You can see that things are just quickly fixed. I was also shocked to see the antic hairdryer, one of those hanging on the wall with a pipe.

To also mention, Internet is not included in the rates!

Location of the hotel is very good, which means if You can get a cheap deal, I would still recommend it, if You do not bother to much about a good bathroom.

I was in shanghai for a night and stayed at the jc mandarin. It was a nice big room but didn't really have a homey feel. The bed was very hard and the bathroom lighting was very dim. The rooms were aged. It was in the heart of the shopping district but far away from other attractions like the bund. I would probably look elsewhere when traveling to shangai again.

The JC Mandarin is not going to be a hotel much longer. Within the next year or so, it is going to be turned into an office building. While it is starting to show its age, it is still a fairly nice hotel. The best thing it has going for it is the breakfast buffet. It is far and away better than the one at the Penta Hotel we stayed at in Beijing. The size of the facility, the choices and the quality were all exceeded our expectations.

The staff are terrific. Laundry service - JUST DON'T DO IT. Let's just say for the price paid for laundry service, I could have bought all new clothes. My fault. I failed to check prices first.

There was a construction issue near the front desk on the concierge side that had a distinct sewer-like odor. It also caused the escalator to be shut down and the steps to the side exit to be partially blocked.

The room was pretty comfortable with a decent bed. The bath had a tub and a great shower. The hair dryer looked like something from the sixties, some sort of Soviet era contraption, although it did work. The towels were fluffy.

The hotel is right on Nanjing Road which makes it easy to navigate. Right across the street is some very high end shopping. Unless you have deep pockets, just go in to admire the place and maybe have a quick snack in the coffee shop.

Room Tip: There is a small (okay, TINY) convenience store about one block from the hotel. Exit the front door...

We stayed there for 3 nights as part of a travel package for our tour throughout china this was the most run down of the hotels we stayed at,out of 5 hotels during our trip. When people say that its older they mean run down, the lobby looks like the only thing keep up. For our room a king is just two singles pushed together with a gap between the two beds, the carpet was so old it had no fibers left in it just the matting holding the fibers, all the fixtures are original is a flash back from the 70's. The size of the room was the smallest of 5 hotels as the same for the bathroom. The bathroom had mold all over it , there was no a/c so we roasted, most of the outlets did not work in the room, the wall paper was falling off the walls. We also had breakfast included the drinks fountains were always empty, and the food was had to come buy because it was always empty, Also this 5 star hotel has no free wi-fi they wanted $25.00 for 24hrs, This was the only hotel out of 5 that charged for it, If need wi-fi just go across to the Ritz Carlton they have free. I would suggest finding another hotel that is a cleaner serves better food and dose not charge for wi-fi

I was visiting Shanghai on a group trip, so I did not get to chose this hotel, but I liked it! The lobby is beautiful and spacious (although it doesn't have enough seating). The hotel room was spacious, with a nice bathroom and pretty views of the fancy neighborhood. The room did seem a little dated, but everything was very clean and comfortable, so it was fine!

The breakfast buffet was pretty great. Be forewarned, coffee drinkers, it's hard to flag down a waitress to give you coffee, but otherwise, no complaints.

Grab a copy of the free Shanghai Times English paper on your way into breakfast. There's also CNN and CNBC in your hotel room.

The hotel is in a very fancy neighborhood with high-end shops and malls on Nanjing Road. It's a pleasant (and safe) place to walk around in the evening. You're also close to a very cool Buddhist temple.

Cons:

- There's no free wi-fi and I was not willing to pay U.S.$20 a day, so I did without. No big deal, I'm on vacation.
- There's a weird box next to the bed to turn on and off the TV and all lights (see photo). It should make it more convenient to turn things on and off from bed, but it led to a light show every night because the buttons never did what they were supposed to do!
- We tried a few of the bars in the hotel and were not impressed. The piano bar had a piano, but no one was playing it on the night we were there, and it seemed a little shabby for such a nice hotel. The Cuba bar was smoky (which makes sense) and very few people were there. The drinks were also pretty pricey, but that's standard for a hotel bar.

The location is good as it is very close to my office. It's easy to find food and transporation in the proximity.

I have stayed there for a few times. The rooms on the lower floors are older. It is better to choose upper floors. Breakfast is good with a wide array of selections though it is not delicate.

Special thanks to the Concierge as they are really helpful!!

Room Tip: Rooms are better on upper floors.
