Old but not dated! Very well maintained hotel. Situated right on famous Nanjing Rd. east padestrian street. This hotel is walking distance from the Bund on Huangpu river and historic French quarters - and across the river to Shanghai Pudong - the impressive new business district of Shanghai. The hotel is right in the middle of high-end; average and street - all kind of shopping! Every type of food option is available in the surrounding. Shanghai People's Square is also nearby.

Rooms and bathrooms are big and clean. Beds are comfortable for good night's sleep.

A first class location backing on to Nanjing road with great shopping, best world name brands and only a 20 minute walk to the Bund and the river. Nice clean rooms and friendly staff. Breakfast acceptable and property has nice restaurants. Maybe our room had been upgraded as everything worked, bathroom very modern and a flat screen TV. Our experience differs from some other reviews and we would stay there again.

Stayed here for 3 nights with elderly and children. For the pros of this hotel, the location of the hotel is super! The famous Nanjing Road pedestrian street is right behind the hotel. There is a back entrance of the hotel which leads you directly on to the Nanjing Road pedestrian street.

For the cons, the room was too humid and warm. No air conditioning in the room. Contacted the front desk staff several times on the issue and we were told that the hotel air conditioning is centralised and will only be used by the end of April. We were there mid April and the day temperature in Shanghai was about 24 c and the room was really warm and humid. Even with the small windows opened, the room is still too warm. The reception area however, has air conditioning.

The hotel's buffet breakfast needs to be highlighted here. The price for the buffet breakfast is too high for the food served. The variety and quality of the food is really low. Spend a fraction of the buffet breakfast money else where for a good breakfast. In other words, simply avoid the buffet breakfast.

All in all, the hotel is located in a strategic location and the price for the hotel in that location is considered reasonable, and remember to avoid the hotel's buffet breakfast.

Room Tip: No A/C in the room in certain months, it will be good to find out which month the hotel starts to use the A/C. Was told the hotel A/C system will be turned on by the end of April.

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a tour group. The hotel is located in Nanjing Road which was a huge plus. The room was in dire need of a makeover, although for me, the bed was comfortable to sleep in. TV set was still box-type. Bathroom was ok and clean enough. Buffet breakfast was terrible. Not enough food variety (they serve mostly breads and pastries) and the menu was the same everyday. What saddened me the most was that they didn't serve rice! Staff was not really that adept in the English language, though they have a basic grasp. Bathroom in the lobby was smelly.

The only thing about this hotel that is its location and nothing else - Nanjing Road East.

The hotel entrance reeks of smoke from the minute you enter the lobby as the cleaning staff don’t seem to be interested in cleaning – only talking to one another.

The concierge staff are rude and unfriendly and as for the reception staff – unless you become aggressive and demanding do they consider helping you as they are constantly on the telephone - yielding phone calls from in-house guests who are complaining.

We deliberately booked an executive room at this hotel as although they say they are a 5*hotel – I would give them 4*’s at a push. When we checked in the receptionist did not explain the ‘benefits’ of booking an Executive Room – we only found out about the benefits from reading the key card holder.

Needless to say the one benefit was the rooms on the Executive Floors had access to the Executive Lounge and we could have breakfast and ‘happy hour’ without the masses of groups in the main breakfast room.

The cleaning staff do not clean the rooms properly and don’t even replace the water bottles unless you ask. The rooms are okay – very dark and in need of a makeover.

Unless you are going to Shanghai for shopping and need to be located on Nanjing Road East I would not recommend this hotel until the staff are trained properly and they have a major refurb.

Room Tip: Do not have a room located next to the lifts as the lifts 'talk' and you can hear the recording from 3floors away. Ask for decent pillows when you check in otherwise you get lumpy, heavy pillows.
