“New Year the Right Way”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

I was in Shanghai for the Chinese new year in January and what a great way to see the city. The city empties out for the new year so walking around was great - the fireworks everywhere were insane. The Pudong Shangri-La has amazing views of the fireworks - fantastic places to eat - luxury rooms - and outstanding service.

This hotel has all the desired amenities, comfortable beds, good food in the restaurants and location handy to the sights of Shanghai. There is shopping nearby and an overhead walkway from which to view the city's lights at night. The breakfast buffet goes on forever, each station better than the previous one. The staff is very accommodating and many speak English, which was helpful.

Excellent hotel right on the Bund, easy walking distance to the river front and spectacular views. Lobby was being refurbished while I was there but very little disruption caused. Plenty of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance.

Rooms are a little old and dated in the older building. Lobby area is very new and location of Hotel is great for for going to Bund and shopping malls.

Great River view but hotel needs some work
Breakfast was amazing. if it can be eaten its on the breakfast Buffet. The Concierge was great and we got a lot done with our three kids.

The hotel is located in the heart of Shanghai Pudong, and I had very nice experience staying in this hotel. I traveled with my husband for his business trip, and the hotel accomodation was excellent. There was a lot of restaurants, shopping and even grocery store, and bakery right next to the hotel, so I could entertain myself while he was at work. The staffs were very helpful and nice. The housekeeping was excellent and they bring you fresh fruit everyday.
The room had a very nice view and quite spacious.
I was able to use the gym and sauna facility everyday, and the staffs were always cleaning, changing towels.

I've stayed in many 5 stars hotel in Asia before, and I would have to say Shangri-La is one of the best hotel I enjoyed staying.

I had a wonderful stay at the Pudong Shangrila in one of their king suites. The suite was huge with views of the river from the lounge, bedroom and bathroom all with showing different angles of pudong. It is the largest room i have ever been in.

Breakfast service was enormous with one of the largest selections of food i have ever seen at a hotel buffet breakfast. Given it was so big it did seem to loose some of the feel and service one might normally associate with shangri la eg dirty plates waited a bit longer than normal before being collected. The quality of the food was however quite good.

Staff were incredibly friendly with great level of english across the board.

In Shanghai i have stayed in the woldorf astoria and the pudong shangrila. i would probably say that the woldorf does have a lot more of a luxurious feel however shangri la isn't far behind. I would highly recommend both hotels however if you were to choose i think you should chose based on location and where you would be spending the most time.

not sure what the fuss is all about, the Pudong Shangri-La was nice, but far from world class. Was in a club level room in the river tower, room and bath were standard 10 year old hotel rooms with nice but dated furniture and finishes. Room was fairly small. Bed and pillows were good. None of the bathroom drains functioned well, I had to keep my showers brief to keep from flooding the room.
Service from check-in and throughout the stay was average at best. Maybe I was expecting more, there was just nothing special, at all. Every staff person I interacted with spoke little to no english, across the board. Every request took an extra minute or two to explain.
The club lounge was quite nice, with an excellent breakfast set up with a made to order option. But again, forget ordering anything you can't point to, the staff could not understand.
More than once we tried asking for restaurant recommendations, both from the lounge concierge and the lobby concierge. They would just keep suggesting the restaurants in the hotel. We were trying to get into the City and try different places, but without their help, with little time to plan, and with the hotel's remoteness we ended up in the mall across the street eating at lame mall tourist traps. Not all the hotel's fault for sure, with more time I would have scouted out places before I got there, but it was an intense five night stay for a conference. Getting basic restaurant suggestions seems part of the concierge's job desrciption. In other great hotels the concierge would have made my reservation and called me a cab, here I was sent to the second floor coffee shop.
One final gripe, if you tell me mulitple times that a suit pressing is complimentary for club level guests, why slip in the $20 charge on my bill?
