Holiday Inn Shanghai Downtown
Ranked #108 of 5,206 Hotels in Shanghai
Reviewed December 1, 2013

Property is located adjacent to the Shanghai rail station and several metro lines, but, for better or worse, is quite a ways from the Bund or touristy areas. The area is marked by busy roads, lots of fast food restaurants but not much in the way of shopping or full service restaurants. Rates are moderate, probably given the location. Lobby is large and well lit, rooms reasonably sized and furnished, and housekeeping did a good job. Room had a tv, desk, safe, and minibar with complimentary tea and instant coffee. Bed was comfortable and bedroom lighting was good. Bathroom was a bit of a tight squeeze, but had a tub. The wall between the bathroom and bedroom was glass with imbedded venetian blinds, which wouldn't completely block light from the bathroom coming into the bedroom at night. Also, task lighting in the bathroom was terrible for shaving or applying makeup. The outside bedroom window was small; fortunately, there were inner- and outer-windows which did a good job in keeping out noise. Hallways had low ceilings and hard walls, so door noise from neighboring rooms would ricochet down the hall late at night. Breakfast buffet in third floor restaurant was very good with a wide variety of choices, including egg/omelet station. Xi's Garden restaurant on the second floor is probably one of the better restaurants in the area and is quite reasonably priced. All in all, the hotel is a good value.

This hotel formed the final part of our tour of mainland China and it compares very favourably with the others in which we stayed. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the beds slightly more forgiving than in some of the other hotels. The breakfast offered an excellent variety of Chinese and European foods - something for even the most fussy guest. It is situated on a busy road but this means that shops and bars are very close.

We stayed in this hotel twice on a tour of China, both rooms were average at best. The beds were comfy and clean although the odd small hole in the sheets. The carpet in both rooms could do with a good clean.
Seemed like the usual boring interior you get with these chain hotels.
Breakfast wasn't bad at all, good range of food and a nice view.
The restaurant where we had dinner was fairly bland and tasteless so i'd go elsewhere as there are a good number of places close by.

As a frequent traveler I got a free upgrade to a suite on the 6th floor of the Plaza wing. Excellent sleep quality with quiet room and very little sunlight creeping in. The room was clean and very spacious, including 2 toilets, 1 shower room and 1 bathtub with a shower. Internet access in the room was bad (it was dropping packets), both using the Ethernet cable and Wifi. Breakfast was quite good and included an egg station. The dinner buffet was poor, with essentially one Western dish choice. But near the hotel you will find restaurants including McDonald's and KFC. Satisfied with the laundry service. The room decoration was nothing to write home about.

The 6th floor corridor was been renovated but this did not affect my stay.

I stayed in the hotel for 2 nights as part of a 7 day group trip to China. This was the 1st hotel and my 1st time in China and was very impressed. It had all the home luxuries and more. Great hotel lobby bar and entertainment in the evening from the singer, very relaxing. I only got to sample the breakfast, but as a western style hotel, there was a lot of choice for everyone and got to try some local delicacies to boot. The mini deserts were lovely too and a nice touch.
Bedroom was spacious and very clean along with the bathroom, nice selection of shampoo etc and a proper hairdryer to use and bathrobes and slippers. My room was facing the motel across the way, but according to my fellow travel companions who were on the railway area, this was good.
Staff I met were friendly and always a smile and welcome. My only regret is that I didn't manage to get back to the gift shop before it closed for the bargain 100 yuan tea set.
I didn't get to see/use all the facilities besides the bar and the room.
Would recommend this hotel and as a 1st time user of a Holiday Inn, I would want to try another one.

Room Tip: Great wall wing

After staying in an average hotel in Beijing, the Holiday Inn Downtown Shanghai was a lovely surprise. Beds were beautifully soft (and pillows), staff were friendly, location was perfect - close to all shopping centres, convenience stores & food/cafes/restaurants. There is a new & old wing of the hotel, separated by an underpass. I didn't visit the older wing, we stayed in the newest wing known as Plaza Wing. The rooms were modern, fresh, clean, bright and comfortable. The only issue which people may find is that the ceilings are low, doors are low, corridors are narrow & rooms are very small. You wouldn't want more than 2 people accommodated in a room. Would certainly stay here again.
