Reasonable sized room, double glazed to prevent noise from the nearby main Shanghai Rail Station. The bed was large and very comfortable. The restaurant is large with a good selection of western and Asian food. The staff were very attentive, pleasant and helpful. Nanjing Rd shops are a short walk away and access into the city is good by rail or cheap taxis. Limited hours in the hotel Business Centre from 9am to 6pm were a negative for internet use on the hotel computers.

The location is excellent - near the trains and underground network. I was not expecting much from this hotel, but the breakfast was reasonable and the rooms much better than expected. Clean, comfortable, good amenities in the bathroom and one of the best selections of TV Channels of many hotels. We stayed for the Formula 1 and a number of people in the hotel were here for the same purpose.

The main drawback is the nightmare that is your attempt to check-in and check-out. The people we were chatting while waiting for check-out had been waiting for 2 hours already and they were at the front of the queue. To check out we just phoned reception from the house phone and said "you can have the rooms back, we've not used the mini-bar" and then we left. Check in was not much easier, though that only took 20 minutes.

For the price, I'd stay again.

Dear nhhk,
Sincere thank you for taking time to share your positive and not so positive experiences during your stay with us. Regarding the check-in/check-out service, would you please let me know more details—guest name, check in and check out dates and room number by email to mary.han@hidt.com.cn We are very concerned about this poor experience and would like to investigate this matter further to ensure our procedures are being upheld. Once again, thank you for your observations and I look forward to the opportunity in welcoming you back to Holiday Inn Shanghai Downtown in the near future, to which I am sure you will experience the true holiday inn experience.

Spent 5 nights here.
Booked as a Plateinum member. On points. for thoes who travel a lot, you will know that the rooms behind to lifts are the cheapest and worst in the place.
That was where I ended up ! Room was a disgrace. In the lifts etc there were posters saying about all the new refurbished rooms. Our room had an old CRT TV. rock hard bed, lounge chair was covered in stains. And toilet didn't flush !
Complained and was moved to another, slightly better room.
Hotel staff on the other had did a great job with what they had to work with.
On the positive side. The location is great, right beside the main railway station. There are plenty of food outlets nearby to try.
If you dont want to go to the resteraunt for breakfast, there is a tiny kiosk in the lobby where you can get a coffee and muffin. But be quick. there are not many there.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the main tower. It appears to be newer.

This was our first stay in Shanghai and we stayed here at th recommendation of a colleague. The room was modern, safe and clean. The amenities are quite good. The staff was professional and efficient. The only negative statement I can make is the same for all of the hotels I have stayed at in China- the internet is S L O W and there should be no charge for guests on top of that it is a bit odd to charge 5 rmb per pg to print boarding passes.
The onsite restaurants have a nice variety to their menus.

Dear jkentris,
Thank you so much for your positive and comprehensive comment about our hotel. We are glad to learn that you have enjoyed your stay. Regarding internet, we are currently negotiating this issue with our third party provider to increase connection speed. I’d like to take this opportunity to promote our Executive Club room. For your next stay if you decide to book our deluxe rooms on our Executive Club floors, the internet access is free and the additional benefits in executive club are definitely worth it! We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back, or perhaps some of your friends whom you may care to recommend our hospitality.

Over the past 6 years, I've made more than 40 business trips throughout China and usually start & finish in Shanghai. So as a regular customer of HIDT, I thought it about time to offer a review of the hotel. Although the building is a bit dated, this doesn't distract from the wonderful staff who work in every department. From front desk, to housekeeping, from F&B to Sales, HIDT have a great team of people to rely upon. Everything is undertaken in a professional manner, and always with a smile. Within a short distance, there are many newly built hotels so the level of competition is fierce. Full marks to the staff members in every respect and I look forward to my next stay in just over a weeks time. For a competitively priced hotel, in a very central location, and with friendly & efficient people, you can't go wrong @ the HIDT. See you soon..!!

Room Tip: Book early!!

There are two significant positives for this hotel:
1. The price is very reasonable
2. The location is good.
But you do get what you pay for. So if you are looking for a hotel in downtown Shanghai which has clean rooms at low prices then this is the place for you. Service is very dodgy in this hotel but this is typical of China where please and thank you's don't seem to be taught in hotel training. The breakfast buffet is only average and service at breakfast is not particularly efficient - customers end up getting their own coffee despite asking. So if you want a low cost hotel in a decent location then this is the place for you - but dn;t expect to much from the staff.

Stayed here for new year 2011 with family. Bed is comfortable with hard or soft pillow choices. Shared room with my cousin with two beds. One bed is big enough for me and my daughter. No free wifi in room. Breakfast was enjoyable. My 4-year old daughter enjoyed it. Walking distance to some malls. But weather was very cold when we went there during winter. Mcdonald's open 24 hours near the hotel where we spent our New year's eve. There were some lady boys hanging out at the outside of the hotel at night, have to be careful. Room door somewhat difficult to open.
