The hotel is nice although old and not very modern. It's located in a very good erea. The breakfast was good but not great, the bathtub isn't big enough and the TV channel selection is poor for the english speakers

Room Tip: Ask for a park view

In the heart of Shanghai's French Quarter, the Hengshan Picardie Hotel is an outstanding value, at about 100 dollars/night!!

Excellent rooms and restaurant / breakfast; and, in case you miss them, it is within walking distance of a bunch of western restaurants, from Italian to Papa John's.

And for a peaceful walk, try the park across the street, to the right as you exit the hotel. And you will may be surprised with such exotics sights as people walking their song birds inside their small cages, to people doing Tai Chi, or older couples having dance lessons!

The hotel is about 5-6 miles southwest of the Bund, away 20 minutes by subway. The nearest subway station is the Hengshan Road station on line 1, about 10-15-minutes on foot. It is located near a busy five-way intersection. While noise is not a problem with this hotel (at least at night), one must take extra care in crossing the streets here. Taken together, the hotel location is not the best.

The room quality is reasonable and should accommodate the needs of most travelers. The major problem is the air conditioning - it's shut off in the middle of the night! If one visits Shanghai during the hot season, I cannot recommend this hotel.

The service is generally good - the room is cleaned fairly promptly, and the front desk staff communicates well in English. The buffet breakfast is very good. The wait staff, though, appear to be somewhat reserved. They appear to worry more about cleaning up the buffet line than serving/refilling coffee or tea.

Room Tip: Non-smoking room

Great Hotel in the most wonderful part of Shanghai, tree lined Streets. Close to Metro and some great bars and eateries. Rooms classic and most comfortable. Staff can appear difficult but push a little and they will always follow through. The guys on the door are gems and will give you some great advice about what is happening locally and in Pudong if you wish to travel to the other side. My favourite when in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Try for Corner rooms ends with 11 or 25 ie 5025

Loved the hotel as it has something that reminds me of home away from home. Very good service and high standard four star hotel is how i would grade it.
the area looks sage - the rooms clean and the restaurants good.

Right across the street from a beautiful park, Hengshan Picardie was in a lovely location. We stayed in Shanghai on two different occasions on our vacation in two different rooms at this hotel. Both rooms were large, very clean and the beds were comfortable. In one on the 11th floor we had an older bathroom while the other on the 9th floor had a more modern bigger bathroom with a separate bath and shower. Both rooms had a computer with a wireless key board neither of which worked (both may have needed batteries). The wi-fi was tricky. They gave you a password that corresponded to your room number and then a numbered password but only one of us could use it at a time. The lobby was big but there were only two chairs and a sofa to sit on. We had two small wheeled suitcases which we could have handled easily, and had in three other hotels. but we were intercepted by the bellmen both times we stayed there who insisted on taking them to the room and then stood there waiting for a tip. A personal pet peeve. The desk staff did not seem very friendly either but it could have been a language issue. Their English was adequate but not great. I do have to give the hotel a lot of credit for storing our group's luggage for 3 days between stays. Most hotels would not be willing or able to do that.
Breakfast served both Chinese and western fare such as eggs, small steaks!, bacon, fruit, and pastries.
On the whole I liked this hotel and would stay there again.

Hotel is on an excellent location, away from the high rises. Just a walk across, u could be inside a small park, just a stroll alongside, u are in one of the lively but lovely streets having a lot of restaurants, small houses of the yester-years, etc. the rooms are good, bed very comfortable, toiletries good....but here and there some minor glitches like peeled off paints in room, toilets, bathtub, etc. for sure this hotel is a 100% targeted to the local visitors, though some foreign guests were found. Staff not very cordial and pleasing in their services and gestures...fronted staff are like serene lifeless machines, restaurant staff ate another group of dumb serene machines, all of them perhaps programmed to work. Not a good feeling on this. The restaurant has a peculiar procedure of getting signatures in bills of 138rmb, for something it is already paid for in the room rate. You get no proper answer from any staff including the managerial cadre. In all, a good property, perhaps badly Staffed. Hospitality sector should not have staff like these and hotel anage net schools can bring in their students to show this as an example of how not staff should be.

Room Tip: There are two annexes...try to get rooms on the corners overlooking the park
