I was a little worried before we arrived that this historic Hotel was not what I hoped for. Well I could not have been more wrong. The Hotel is just perfect. A great combination of central location, yet nice and quite; superb breakfasts (for all your different tastes); well appointed rooms; very friendly and helpful staff and lastly the view. We spend a little more on the River View rooms and it was worth every cent. I'm sure the others are fine too, but the view down over the Bund, both Rivers and Pudong both morning and night were just glorious. Try and see for yourself. One small issue we did have was the bed was firmer than we like. But a trip to the front deck resolved that very quickly for us. Thanks.

Room Tip: Go for the River View.

As mentioned in other reviews, this hotel is not up to a north American 5-star rating. I would say I high end 3 which is pretty good in China. We had a very spacious room with doubles rather than single beds, hard indeed, with great pillows. The room was well equipped with stand up shower and separate tub. Breakfast was good and varied.
We appreciated the location and the view. Even more we appreciated the history behind the location. We came across a photo while in Beijing of the water front and this hotel in the 1950's.
There is a slight odour of sewage in the lobby which I found to be common in China anyway. It is difficult to communicate with staff as English is not a given but we managed. In spite of the few problems we would definitely stay here again. Again, if you are set on a 5-star then do not stay here. Go down the street to the Astor.

Room Tip: second floor around 226 are larger rooms.

i would like to share this experinece with others intending to stay at this hotel,my wife traveled to shanghai with my sisters, total of 4 in party. They had made booking for superior rooms facing the Bund.when they arrived, was told no rooms available and were offered 4 separate rooms ,originally booked 2 dble twin.when complained it was not acceptable were offered twin rooms, but had to pay RMB600.they agreed, then the manager came out and said it was US 600,this is totally arrogance by the manager, when we made the booking all was made in RMB.the next morning i tried to ring my wife from NZ at 12.30 NZtime which was 7.30 China time.was told not able to be put through ,i tried later with the same response.the next morning the same thing happened. It is very frustrating ,when this is supposed to be 5 star establishment and the staff are incompetant and lacking in understanding of English .I would definatly not recomend this establishment

Just back from an 8 night stay at this hotel. Well located for the bund, and within walking distance of the people's square, Yu gardens and shopping. It is a little out of the action though - so we found once we had trekked back there at the end of the day we were too tired to go anywhere other than the immediate neighbourhood afterwards. There are a few very local restaurants right behind the hotel.

We had a side room which had everything in it that we could want. The hairdryer was one of those attached to the wall with a very tight spiral cord and only worked if you held your finger on the button - so if this matters, bring your own!

On the first and second mornings there we advised the front desk that there was a problem with the safe in the room - nothing was done on either occasion.

The weather was variable - ranging from 10-27 degrees C during the day. One day the temperature in our room was 26 degrees and the aircon would not alter this. Next morning we asked for this to be looked at. No change by the end of the day so we rang the customer service person who came up to the room. He advised that nothing could be done as the hotel was still on winter heating and the system couldn't provide any cooling. Why have controls in the guest rooms at all if they can do nothing?! He suggested we keep a window open - but traffic noise made that impractical and it did not cool the room until late at night. We also pointed out the safe issue and he re-set it on the spot. Why couldn't that have been done earlier?!

The breakfast buffet was fairly extensive. Although there were burners under the food - it was cold - to the point of being inedible in some cases (notably hash browns). There were cereal dispensers which were always almost empty and usually only one or two had anything in them. This isn't hard folks - they just need topping up! It isn't going to go off!

There was wifi available in the room and there was no charge for this.

As has previously been noted, the beds are hard. And I mean HARD. I've never encountered a bed this hard in a hotel. But the pillows were great!

The hotel lobby does have a truly terrible smell - coming up from the drains I'd imagine. They obviously spray stuff to try and disguise the ever present smell, but it doesn't help much.

Forewarned by previous reviews, we requested a non smoking room. It did have ashtrays and matches, but didn't smell too bad. However, there was heavy smoking in rooms nearby and it was impossible to avoid this in the corridors and wafting into our room.

Although I've highlighted what we saw as issues, this is China and we didn't expect perfection. We'd read the reviews of others before we went and didn't expect a 5 star stay. This is a 4 star experience.

The hotel is nice, but slightly shabby. Staff are attentive (but don't follow through - as mentioned earlier). I would stay here again.

Certainly not five star by American standard, but quite attractive on arrival through front lobby. Our room on the fifth floor faces the Bund. The view is very attractive. I just observed the stunning sunset, but could not get a picture because of the shape of the room, and the window opens only so far! The buffet style breakfast is varied and quite tasty.
The room could do with a facelift & refurbishing. The chair at the desk is torn and tattered.
The staff is helpful, but short on smile. However, there are little thoughtful touches such as a bathroom scale, scissors in the desk drawer, robe, & slippers. Free wi-fi available!
I would certainly return if the opportunity arise.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Bund. They will oblige if they are able to.

It has a great locations and a great view. We enjoy every minute. The employees are very cordial and help you as much as they can. The restaurant in the second floor is good for breakfast and the have a buffet that brings you local and american food for different taste.

In general we enjoy it and the price is very reasonable for the service that you get.

Stayed at The Broadway Mansions Hotel for three nights in Mars 2014. The building is 80 years old and an attraction itself with a New York style brown brick facade and a perfect location on the Bund and in Shanghai and in good condition. Before they built the Oriental Pearl on the Pudong side, this was the best place to view The Bund.

Try to get a room high up on The Bund side and you will not get disappointed. Room was well equipped and clean. WiFi was working but could have been stronger. Breakfast had a lot to offer. You have a walking distance to the Bund and Nanjing Road etc.

The hotel was helpful with getting taxisand helped us to talk to the driver. Don´t forget to bring the hotels card with you if you want to take a taxi back.

Avoid the British Bar - at least the food.

Room Tip: High up towards the Bund.
