“Good location with great view”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

Booked a bund view executive room. Considered one of the most economical among all the hotels I search around the bund. Stayed for 2 nights and had a great time walking around the bund. Room with colonial shanghai flavor. The bed is humongous but bedroom smaller space. had to roll over if need a view of the bund. bathroom great with lots of space for my toiletries that other hotels do not give much of a space. My 2 bosses love their rooms too. Breakfast okay. Some continental breakfast choices but cooked food mainly for the locals. one of the older concierge was really helpful and he remembered us whenever we pass by.

Room Tip: Must chose the view with the bund view.

Probably the worst customer service ever. I arrived after a delayed and bumpy flight at around 1am to discover that there had been a mistake with my booking and and my confirmed booking was for the following week. I was informed that the hotel was full so I could not stay there unless I wanted to pay to upgrade to a suite at the full rack rate. (chances of them filling it any other way at 1:30am looked unlikely so doing a deal on this rate would have made financial sense but they refused to budge). They offered to call some other hotels but they could only do so using my phone. I have no idea why but at that point the additional roaming charges were the least of my worries so I handed over the phone. Anyway after 15 minutes of chattering with ctrip all guy at the desk was able to come up with was somewhere near by that had rather dodgy reviews (i'd fired up the laptop by this time) and 'do you mind if there isn't a window?' So I decided it would be best to leave and find another hotel on my own. Fortunately I travel to Shanghai often. The following day i tried to change the booking having been led to believe that this would be possible due to booking.com plastering it all over thir site. Not the case. The booking.com support desk rang the hotel and asked them if they would change the booking but they refused. they would still be charging my creditcard the full fee. I rang the hotel myself - and a Ms Wang added indult to injury by stating that she wouldn't refund the booking, she wouldn't change the booking even if i offered to pay a higher rate. Instead she suggested that if I wanted to stay there I was welcome to make a new booking for the additional nights. She seemed surprised that I didn't want to take her up on the offer. Is it that strange that I would rather stay in ANY hotel rather than one that knowingly charges customers for room sights that they are never going to use? I mean i could almost understand this policy if I was cancellining on the day I was supposed to arrive or if i didn't turn up at all but it was a week in advance and I had only booked the room one day earlier. I tried to explain that this policy decision was actually losing them money: Not only could they release the room and sell it at a higher rate, it would be actually full with someone who might do things like order room service or spend money in the restaurants. As mentioned i travel frequently to Shanghai and might have stayed there often.

As it is, I doubt that i would have gone back anyway even if the service fiasco hadn't taken place. It looks conveniently loated on a map but the traffic controls around the area make it troublesome to get to, so not good for the business traveller. While i didn't get to see the rooms the hotel doesn't have its own driveway or porters so anyone with luggage will be left struggling with it on the street. The lobby is gloomy and the bar is typically expensive (I didn't have anything but I overheard other guests complaining) and there is no other night life in walking distance.

I stayed for 2 days in this hotel, the location is very good, just a little walk to get to the bund and nanjing road. I also use the services of an airport transfer from Longyang road station (because we want to feel the maglev train from the airport) to the hotel. we get a fairly reasonable price. And to return to the Airport (Hongqiao), I also decided to use the services of an airport transfer from the hotel.

From the outside, it appears that the hotel is not modern, but if you go inside, you will find a hotel with 5 star quality, perhaps management hotel decided not to renovate the exterior of the hotel to make it look more classic, since the hotel was built in 1934, before shanghai has many skyscrapers like today.

Room Tip: Buy a room with the bund view must be awesome, but I felt it was not necessary, because you can see...

We stayed for 2 nights while waiting for our ship to arrive. We were on a cruise but jumped ship to take an individual land tour in Beijing, then caught up with the ship in Shanghai. The hotel had been booked by the travel agent so have no idea of cost. The hotel really stands out at the end of the Bund, with the dark brick. It is an older hotel, check in was quick and efficient (we did have a chinese guide with us for the 2 days). On a day that looked like rain, we could borrow umbrellas (leaving a small deposit, of money that is). The corridors are all over the place. We did have a river view but it was the side river, not the main one on the Bund. The room was adequate, quite dark with heavy furniture, but clean. Like most hotels in China, always a slight smell of cigarette smoke lingering around. Breakfast was included and with a choice of both eastern and western dishes, it did the job. Not haute cuisine but I have had a lot worse. Location was really good, just a short walk to the Bund. Fantastic watching the lights in the evening and taking a stroll seeing all the young couples having their wedding photos taken in very dressy outfits. Apparently the photos get taken up to 7 months before the actual wedding and they get a package which includes the hire of all the dresses. It was quite cold, they must have been freezing. It suited us fine for the 2 days we were there. There is so much to see and do in Shanghai, we just fell into bed at the end of the day, quite happy.

Nice location, that's it. Our room was so small you had to step out in the hall to change your mind. We had a great view of the air conditioner...when the window was open. Otherwise it's all painted over. Did I mention the smell? The whole time we stayed the hotel reeked of backed up sewer. It has potential but at this point I would look elsewhere. If you do stay bring google translator. English speaking staff are hard to find. The food is.. well...awefull

Good price, great location and thats about it, forget 5 star, its a lie, clean its not, old building. Dont stay here if you are on vacation, its not that kind of hotel. Dont give credit card for garantee or payment, they block the funds for over a month plus charge small amount two weeks after you have left for nobody know what. Try to pay cash. Overal i really dont recommend it. Also no real staff with english language skills

We stayed for three nights in this hotel, which I booked in large part because of the view on the Bund and Pudong that it was said to have. The view was in fact disappointing, insofar as the lights in Pudong go off by 10 pm, well before we came back to the room. Besides, the breakfast was really mediocre.
