“Historic, gentile, comfortable journey back in Bund history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2011

This hotels location on the Bund and its classic 1930's architecture is part of its great charm. There are many floors and recently the management have offered two floors of non smoking rooms. I would recommend that you choose a higher floor and a room at the front of the building as you will have spectacular views of the Hang Po river and the historic Bund. This is especially rewarding at night when all the lights of the river and the tower blocks of the financial district give a world class view. I stayed there twice in June and both rooms were very clean and the beds really comfortable; I slept very well. The higher floor also takes away the traffic noise. The room has very efficient air conditioning and as it was in the high 80's outside, this was welcome. Tea in the foyer is also a pleasant experience and service is very good. The bathroom was extremely well stocked with toiletries and great towels. On arrival there is a good porterage service. I also used the laundry service which was very reasonable and again first class. Breakfast, (which was not included in my price) was expensive as I only wanted some coffee and toast but if you were going to set your self up for the day there was a good choice both European and Chinese. Checking in was a little tricky and make sure you have your booking references with you! I liked this hotel very much and I consider this it to be good value, great service and a slice of history.
Some general tips, the Bar Service in the hotel is good and worth a night cap and to see some old photographs and unusual memorabilia (you will understand when you go). Adjacent to the Hotel is a old bridge affording access to the Bund. For some reason you can see Bride and Grooms having their photograph's taken on the Bridge! All day, every day, rain or shine, fascinating. Also you will be approached by street hawkers trying to sell fake purses pens and other items. A polite no does stop them but they appeared to try every time I left the hotel even when getting into a taxi! Taxi's are very very good value and they do not expect a tip, in fact tipping is generally unexpected. Do go the French Concession area it is worth it and you must not miss the pearl market as it is an experience and you can make some great purchases. There are two Buddhist temples and you should visit at least one if you can, they so peaceful. If you have limited time take the tourist bus trip, it is also good value and a great way to see everything and get your bearings. An evening river trip is also a must pay the extra few RMB to sit in the 'VIP' area at the front. You can get tickets at the tourist office on the Bund. The Chinese people I met were very friendly and polite if your try a few words such as hello, thank you etc it is appreciated. **When arriving in Shanghai Airport go to the official taxi stand or use the hotel shuttle servcie. Taxi into the city is less than 200 RMB £20. Do not use a taxi tout who will be waiting at the arrivals gate offering services. I felt safe in Shanghai and it is a great world city. If your flight out is early morning then leave with plenty of time as the traffic is incredible.

Dark art deco syle that looks a gotham city hotel. Great location on the Bund and bay. Service, breakfast was very good though the rooms looked a bit outdated but were clean. Stayed with the family as a part of the tour and have no complaints

Room was clean and comfortable, although the bed was awfully hard (even for china). The staff were extremely patient with us westerners and were very helpful in booking transfers. There were aspects that we didn't get a chance to experience, such as the british pub and the tea house, both of which looked like fun. The location can't be beat, located at one end of the Bund. It is also a reasonable walk to Nanjing road. Also good for the price.

Generally, happy with our stay at the broadway. Good spacious rooms and a good location.Couple of minor hiccups - the room wasn't made up when we arrived, the internet should be free (80 yuan an hour) at a hotel of this type and the beds could be softer but overall the pros outweighed the cons. The staff were helpful, the rooms were spacious and comfortable and a good base to see Shanghai. Recommend.

Stayed for two nights in a river view room with my partner, arrived early and got straight into room which was great start.Staff efficient but bell boys very friendly and helpful.
The river view was excellent especially at night, would recommend paying the little extra when booking for the view!
Room was spacious, clean and the bathroom was fantastic.
This hotel is right at the top of the bund so you have the lovely walk along it into town every morning. Everywhere is within walking distance(if you are happy to do quite alot of walking) although the metro system is also very cheap and easy to use and the tickets machines are in english.
Nearby to eat is shanghai Grandmother which is cheap and tasty.
One tip would be don't get a private airport taxi on arrival no matter how jet lagged you are , it costs £50 and the driver expects a tip , although you can expect no less than a Buick if you fancy driving into the city in style. It's much easier to get a metered taxi or the Maglev and a metro , which is a great experience.
Shanghai is an amazing city , I would also recommend Shanghai Pathways Tours - we went on the bird, flower and antique tour and got a taste of the real Shanghai with a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide!
Enjoy

Stayed here in April 2011 as part of package trip of China. Hotel reflects the style of the 1930's / 40's (being built in 1934). Hotel room we were in had no view, was a little dark but was excellent, clean and good size with very good bathroom. Ideal for a few days as a tourist. Hotel staff efficient and breakfast very good. Breakfast restaurant had good views. ATM in lobby.

During our stay, I inadvertently lost my bank card in the lobby ATM. The concierge arranged for the bank to send over staff at my convenience. They graciously recovered my card within my itinerary's time frame. Xie xie! (Thank you). The hotel was clean, the bed comfortable and the Eastern/Western breakfast buffet superb. An excellent place to begin a 3 week stay in China!
