This hotels location on the Bund and its classic 1930's architecture is part of its great charm. There are many floors and recently the management have offered two floors of non smoking rooms. I would recommend that you choose a higher floor and a room at the front of the building as you will have spectacular views of the Hang Po river and the historic Bund. This is especially rewarding at night when all the lights of the river and the tower blocks of the financial district give a world class view. I stayed there twice in June and both rooms were very clean and the beds really comfortable; I slept very well. The higher floor also takes away the traffic noise. The room has very efficient air conditioning and as it was in the high 80's outside, this was welcome. Tea in the foyer is also a pleasant experience and service is very good. The bathroom was extremely well stocked with toiletries and great towels. On arrival there is a good porterage service. I also used the laundry service which was very reasonable and again first class. Breakfast, (which was not included in my price) was expensive as I only wanted some coffee and toast but if you were going to set your self up for the day there was a good choice both European and Chinese. Checking in was a little tricky and make sure you have your booking references with you! I liked this hotel very much and I consider this it to be good value, great service and a slice of history.
Some general tips, the Bar Service in the hotel is good and worth a night cap and to see some old photographs and unusual memorabilia (you will understand when you go). Adjacent to the Hotel is a old bridge affording access to the Bund. For some reason you can see Bride and Grooms having their photograph's taken on the Bridge! All day, every day, rain or shine, fascinating. Also you will be approached by street hawkers trying to sell fake purses pens and other items. A polite no does stop them but they appeared to try every time I left the hotel even when getting into a taxi! Taxi's are very very good value and they do not expect a tip, in fact tipping is generally unexpected. Do go the French Concession area it is worth it and you must not miss the pearl market as it is an experience and you can make some great purchases. There are two Buddhist temples and you should visit at least one if you can, they so peaceful. If you have limited time take the tourist bus trip, it is also good value and a great way to see everything and get your bearings. An evening river trip is also a must pay the extra few RMB to sit in the 'VIP' area at the front. You can get tickets at the tourist office on the Bund. The Chinese people I met were very friendly and polite if your try a few words such as hello, thank you etc it is appreciated. **When arriving in Shanghai Airport go to the official taxi stand or use the hotel shuttle servcie. Taxi into the city is less than 200 RMB £20. Do not use a taxi tout who will be waiting at the arrivals gate offering services. I felt safe in Shanghai and it is a great world city. If your flight out is early morning then leave with plenty of time as the traffic is incredible.
