“Heritage Property around the Bund”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2014

Shanghai is a huge city & it is very important for the visitor to choose the area or location beforehand so suit ones needs.

For those who want to be close to the BUND & to enjoy leisurely walks , East Nanjing pedestrian street and also looking for a feel of History will appreciate this hotel.

Our room on the 5th Floor, itself was huge ( almost double in size to other hotels), very clean & the beds very very comfortable. The bathroom too was big with a separate tub & shower area. All in all a very lovely room with hints of luxury and good for the total price of approx 550 RMB we paid but without breakfast.

The hotel is located in a quiet area just yards off the bund and the moment you walk on to the bridge & towards the Bund one is taken aback by the view. The walk on the Bund area which is the picture post card of the city and then on wards on to east Nanjing pedestrian street is a must do for any visitor to Shanghai and by that requirement the location of the hotel is very good.

The hotel itself is said to be built in 1846 AD (?) all with wooden flooring etc & the property is dotted with old photos which give you a feel of history & also what the bund looked like then.

The CON is that the closest metro station of East Nanjing is about a kilometer away & therefore for those wanting to use the metro frequently or majorly do shopping or are physically challenged it may be better stay elsewhere. Also one also has to climb 7/8 stairs to get to the lift from the lobby area.

Room Tip: The 5th Floor Rooms were good . Maybe the front facing rooms have a Bund View.

Dear guest,Thanks for choosing us and comment. The Astor House Hotel is a distinguished gathering place for both Chinese and foreign political figures, as well as well-known celebrities. Dignitaries such as Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Russell, and Zhou Enlai, have all stayed at this hotel. The Astor House Hotel is also a place where Chinese culture and western civilization converged. The first electric lamp, the first telephone, the first semi-sound film, and the first Western-style social dance all made their debut in China at the Astor House Hotel. After three centuries, Astor House Hotel retains its architectural elegance and bears the marks of historical changes. She, resembling a monument, reflects the transformation of Shanghai.
We will work hard and try our best to provide guest a more comfortable living surroundings and best services. Thank you again and looking forward to serving you next time.

This was our first visit to China and the hotel and location provided a very gentle introduction. It is a first class location for sightseeing and great views. The decor is a little dated but we loved the history and ambience . The staff were very friendly and there was always someone who spoke good english. Service was good and prompt.
Breakfasts OK with choice of Chinese or Western.
We were offered an upgrade ( at modest cost) to a 5th floor suite which we found great as it gave us a lounge area for relaxing and getting over the jet lag. There was some traffic noise but not really a problem. Bed was very comfy and a very large bathroom with walk in shower and bath. Views were fabulous! Thoroughly recommend

Room Tip: We had 507 - well worth the extra compared to a rather claustaphobic room overlookinmg the street.

This is the second time staying at the Astor House hotel. It is still good value for the history of the building. This time we stayed at the back of the hotel - good point not too much traffic, bad point - a long track to get to the room.
There was a film company at the hotel, so the main dining room was not open for part of the stay. However this was not a problem.
Location is excellent for the bund, nanjin lu, the pearl tower and people watching.

Room Tip: If you need a lift ask for the front of the hotel, but this could be noisy.

As everybody says, it's historic, charming, oldy worldy, and definitely has character, I also remind people that it's cheaper so you can't expect standards of other more expensive hotels, I think for mid range prices it's a great option as it delivers in sense of location being right on bund, service is still friendly, attentive, rooms very spacious, clean bathroom, cleaners in twice a day etc, breakfast is not great so I wouldn't bother doing that unless you're curious to see the grand room it's served in, like I was, it's a place I'll always remember and mainly for the right reasons so I think it's worth a go if you want some affordable accommodation in Shanghai with a central location, but don't expect peninsula standard obviously...and go with an open mind, it's an old hotel with some slightly odd things about it, probably needs a revamp but when that happens, prices will go up! The main positive is being on the bund with amazing views as soon as you walk out of hotel, lots of history and quirkiness..

The Astor House hotel is ideally situated for The Bund. Every day many brides would have their photos taken nearby and the prom is wide and safe to wander about even quite late at night. The hotel seems from a different age, but that added to it's charm. The room a twin bedded was large and no complaints to the service received. However I could only opened the room windows with difficulty. The hotel has many photographs displayed from when it was first opened in Shanghai. My, how this city has grown so fantastically! I did not have food in the hotel, breakfast was not included in the price unfortunately. Overall I would recommend The Astor but if you are looking for a very modern 5 star hotel, then maybe this place of history is not for you.

If you are interested in history and culture, this is the hotel for you. Do not expect luxury room with pool and spa.
The hotel location is near the bund after crossing Waibaidu Bridge, opposite Russian Embassy and near Peninsula hotel. The first hotel by the bund, the first shanghai stock exchange and many movies and TV series filmed there.
The room is clean and the breakfast is basic yet it is picturesque. Highly recommend for those who enjoy seeing old shanghai but not a tourist spot.

I see that this hotel has received mixed reviews. And for good reason. It has a lot of charm but it is not your classic 5 star hotel – and it is not the Westin. If you’re after cookie-cutter cool, go somewhere else. If you like a more.... authentic (?) and original hotel experience, then this might be the place for you.

We travelled as a family; 2 adults and 2 children aged 7 and 10 and on checking in I was offered an upgrade to a larger executive room for an extra fee. I took the upgrade option and was glad I did.

Our suite was lovely and large with big windows letting in plenty of light, and a skewed view to the river and Waibaidu Bridge. The room included one double and one king single bed, a large desk with all the facilities, a big screen TV, full mini-bar and a lovely large bathroom. Everything was clean and seemed to have been reasonably recently refurbished. Even the wooden floors, which squeaked a little. That’s the good.

The bad is the journey to get to the suite. The lobby is small but impressive looking – lots of dark timber, period light fittings etc. But the dark timber and minimal light is a bit off putting in the hallways of the upstairs floors, where the rooms are located. Upstairs, everything appeared a bit dark and dingy until we actually got to our room.
The staff we encountered were so-so. Nothing special to note. What is special is the location: right on the river and a very short walk to the Bund history museum and the Bund itself, and not too much further to Nanking Street.

The building (I believe its baroque revival) is beautiful and inside it’s charming in that rustic sort of way. The period features are lovely and the history of the building makes it a rather special place to stay – a colonial era building that housed China’s first trading stock exchange and a number of important guests like Einstein and Charlie Chaplin and former US President Grant.

All that good news but this hotel is not for everyone. Just know what you’re getting into.
