“Excellent location & value”

This hotel is only just off the Bund and is in a great location. We paid about £53 per night and got a massive room with a brand new ensuite. Had a view of the Bund / Pudong from the bathroom. Don't really know why this hotel has not decided to go more up market considering its location which 5 star hotels such as the Peninsula only minutes away.

This Victorian era hotel has a lot of history with a lot of famous guests lining the wall including Charlie Chaplin, Einstein & a 19th century US president Grant.

Our taxi to Pudong airport in the morning (with no traffic) took the best part of 1 hour and cost 192 RMB. [Hongqiao airport into which we arrived in Shanghai is much closer than Pudong airport].

Only word of warning is that guests in rooms near the lift will hear the creakings of the lift. We stayed in room 618 and could hear the lift mechanism anytime someone used the lift.

Room Tip: Only word of warning is that guests in rooms near the lift will hear the creakings of the lift. We s...

This hotel has everything and is sure to attract anyone who loves a sense of history, charm and luxury. We had a suite which was basically three rooms with an enormous bathroom, sitting room and a giant bed. While it has a real sense of history and tradition it still maintains all the mod cons, with three TV's for example, including one to watch while soaking in a bath. There are 180 degree views of The Bund which can be viewed from different locations in the room, while the bar and breakfast rooms were tremendous. The staff struggled a little with their English but were very keen to assist in anyway they could. It got a little noisy at night but we actually enjoyed that and left the windows open to enjoy the hustle and bustle from the Bund while enjoying a beer or two. Great place to stay.

Room Tip: If you can, pay a little extra and stay in the "Richard Suite" on the third floor

From the moment you walk into reception you feel the history of this beautiful hotel which sets it apart from all the others. The rooms are spacious, clean and very comfortable. The location is perfect right on the Bund and views of the Shanghai skyline. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Great hotel, helpful staff. On the Bund a must is to go for walk after dark to watch the light show. Breakfast is a real treat - mix of Chinese and western.
Free wifi
Lovely large rooms - we had a double and a twin - lovely and clean
Quiet at all times
As a family we loved shanghai

Stayed here for about 6-7 nights. Price is very reasonable. Easy walking distance to The Bund. If you like hotels with charm and history this is the place. I enjoyed just exploring the hotel. The breakfast (western) they serve is fairly good and attracts a large organized crowd. Beds like most Chinese hotels that I have stayed was hard. Taxi drivers know where the hotel is so easy to get to after a long day of walking.

No language issues with the staff. I actually called from the US and found a front desk person who spoke English.
Once again, a lot of history in the hotel. Very good location.

I stayed at Astor house on recommendation from a friend. Good choice.!
Whilst most of the modern hotels are out of the true centre of Shanghai (The Bund), The Astor is not only by the Bund but also the oldest hotel in China. Lovely character rooms(I stayed in the room Chairman Mao's right hand man stayed in no less). Einstein also stayed there along with may other famous people. The Peacock Room where I had breakfast (good choice was to be enjoyed) is amazing. there are galleries of old photographs on the 1st floor and many other memories of the past around the hotel. Little noisy outside as definitely no double glazing in this hotel, butr hey. It's Shangai. Take the old spanmish galeon cruise and buffet to take some great night shots or go up the 'bottle opener' tower.

Room Tip: higher floor smaller rooms but may be quieter. Ask for a room with a view of The Bund

This hotel is very well located near the Bund. It was in Shanghai August (2013) really too hot to do anything, but the hotel was good. The breakfast is both asiatic and western style. The staff is very friendly. We stayed with two children in one big room: enough space, but we missed rooms with a view. The beds for the adults were good, but the children complained about their small beds. ..T You can see the rich history of the hotel in photographs everywhere.
