“Loved every second”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

We spent 5 days in Shanghai at the Astor House Hotel. From the second you walked in you can tell that this establishment attracts only the best the world has to offer. Majority of the interior has very fine details and you can instantly tell that this place was filthy rich in history, dating back to 1851 according to Wikipedia. Almost every corner is covered in various style of photography taking pride in the fact that their corridors have been blessed by the presence of the likes of presidents, world renowned entertainers and even Charlie Chaplin himself.

Doormen and receptionists are good, but not as good as they should be. Many of them don't speak or speak very little English (like anywhere in China really), however, they are not rude in anyway and work very hard to give what you require despite the fact that telling them what you want may become a bit of a challenge.

Don't eat at the restaurant though, like any hotel they over charge and has mediocre quality at best. Same with the massage service, prices are very expensive; though with that said, I didn't use it so I am not sure about the quality they offer.

we spend 12 nights to the Astor House Hotel. We had booked the room with an internet booking service. We had decided to choice a confortable room due to the number of nights. We were desapointed when the from desk asked us to pay more because the room that was booked is not "good for us".....
After negotiations, we had a nice but noisy room with windows on the main street. The windows are not at all efficient against noise.
This would be a detail if it was not at Shanghai. This city is the horn city.... very, very, very noisy city.
However, this hotel is marvelous for history. This building was the first hotel in Shanghai. Really walking and visiting the buidling is very nice. The breakfirst

Room Tip: try one night for the more expensive one on the 3rd floor

If you book online well in advance this hotel represents good value. When you book, choose 'deluxe apartment' as some of the penthouse apartments can be quite small and dark. Make sure you take the time to walk around the hotel as it has a history dating back to the late 1900s and has had some interesting people staying there e.g. Marconi, Wallace Simpson (although they don't advertise that!) and some of the rooms are fitted out exactly as they were in the 1930s. Rooms are a good size, super clean and well serviced with comfortable beds. Breakfast buffet is good value, with a wide variety of food and it's worth having as the breakfast room is an old, beautifully restored ballroom. Staff speak English, are efficient and helpful and, although quite expensive, there is a cafe and restaurant (and small post office) onsite that serve good food. I would recommend this hotel for its central location - 3 minutes from the North Bund and across the road from the Suzhou river inlet which has some interesting buildings and galleries from the British Concession.

Room Tip: As another traveller said, sometimes they get you to 'upgrade' to a room with more light. Th...

I really liked this hotel due to its history and old style charme. My room was huge and very comfortable with nice bathroom. This is not 5 star luxury as it once was but if you like old places with some more character, i would hughly recommend this place. Plus it is around the corner from the Bund and other attractions.

The Astor House hotel is located on a good spot on a 2 minutes walk from The Bund in Shanghai. The hotel shows iets colonial past when you enter. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century it was frequented by celebs from all over the world. Albert Einstein, US President Grant, Charlie Chaplin to name a few. Unfortunately the hotel has lost its glory. It even contributes to the devaluation of the room qualifications. We booked in example a luxury room but when we checked in an up grade to an executive room was recommended due to the fact that the luxury room had no WiFi nor a bath. We checked both rooms and indeed concluded that an up grade was inevitable. We bargained (...) a good price but found out later that WiFi still did not work. Apart from this the room was good. Clean, spacious, comfortable bed, good airconditioning, well equiped bathroom. The staff is friendly but the skills in other languages besides Chinese are disappointing. All in all a good place for tourists. Business people have nothing to gain by booking this hotel.

This is an interesting hotel with a lot of history (I suggest you read up yourself on their website on Wikipedia etc). I always take the Richard Executive Room (or better). I think the price is pretty good and it is in a top location. There is often no view from the room so this is a downside given the great views you can get along the Bund in other hotels. The rooms can also be noisy. The better rooms happen to be on the lower floors and the street noise around the hotel is quite loud and goes all night. That being said, I recommend taking one of the better rooms and spending a few nights in the hotel.

I have been here a few times but I would not recommend it as a recurring type of property for frequent visitors to Shanghai. Rather come and stay once for a few days and see the history etc and then if you are staying in Shanghai move to a more modern hotel perhaps with a view of the Bund if that is what you like. For returning travellers to Shanghai, this place is good for a one off etc but not for every visit.

I will say the service in this hotel is not as good as in some of the other hotels I have stayed at in Shanghai.

There is a great sense of history to this hotel, the walls are lined with boards showing the history, saying which great personalities had stayed there etc. If you like a hotel with character and charm, and history, then you should stay here. It is much more special than a modern hotel.

The hotel is in a good location for the Bund (about 4minute walk away), and downtown Shanghai (10-15min). To get to the French Concession is either a longish walk (30-45min+), or an easy metro ride.

Great value when I stayed. I think I paid about 70USD per night and had a double room, which came with two decent sized beds. Very spacious room, quiet. Nice white tiled old bathroom, but classy, everything worked. Big mirror. The room was spacious, with wooden flooring. Heavy curtains. Nice room.

Staff were fine, not rude, nor super friendly.

Breakfast in the old ballroom was fine, enjoyable. Fresh fruit, all the usual. Attentive service.

Great value, nice old historical hotel, but very comfortable. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

( I stayed in June 2012, but i see I can't select that on the drop down menu).
