“Great choice for 48 hrs in Shanghai”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2012

Historic, clean, beautifully elegant and comfy beds for China. We were on the 6th floor and had a very large room. There is a buisness center for printing boarding passes etc, restaurant, bar. Wifi is only in the lobby.

This hotel is a great location near the Garden Bridge, quick walk to the Bund and about 15 minute walk to Nanjing East metro station on Line 2. We took the Maglev (430 km and only 8 minutes from the airport to Line 2) and then another 15-20 minutes to Nanjing East.

I had booked Astor House based on price, so was not expecting too much in the way of facilities. However this tuned out to be a beautiful hotel, with tons of character, very friendly staff with good English, and probably one of the largest and nicest rooms I have had in China. Very beautiful old fashioned room, that fitted with the heritage character of the hotel. Breakfast had a good selection, but as always in China most items tended to be lukewarm. Coffee was very good though.

The only downside is that a few rooms face onto a busy street, however to be honest I am a very fussy and light sleeper and once the double glazed french doors were closed I hardly noticed it. They do have many inner rooms too which I am sure they would allow you to request.

I would totally recommend Astor House to any traveller.

Location is ideal. You are literally 20 or 30 metres from the Waibaidu Bridge which opens out directly onto the Bund by the Peoples Heroes Monument. 10 minute walk to the subway, quick taxi ride to most places in the centre of town.

Room Tip: Request an inner room if road noise is a major concern.

Unique experiance staying in this old hotel, rooms are huge, wonderful teak floors, quite comfortable beds, good breakfast selection and the staff helpful. Amazing history. Could be a superb hotel if it was looked after a bit better. Keep the old charm but with more love and care. Excellent location.

Treat yourself to an amazing breakfast served in the Peacock Hall which was the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and is resplendent with 4 chandeliers.
Great location off the Bund.
BBC world news on Tv and superb service. Charlie Chaplin . Bertrand Russell and Ullyses Grant stayed here and walked on the amazing teak floors.

I stayed in this hotel for two nights and loved it. The location is very convenient (cross the street from the old steel bridge on the Suzhou Creek) for a stroll on the Bund and the staff very friendly and helpful. This is a hotel with a strong touch of history, being the oldest western hotel in the city and hosted the stay of many historical figures.

There are not many options for foods around though, and walking to the subway station takes about 15-20 minutes.

I stayed in a small room in the back, very quite, but I can imagine rooms facing the street side can be noisy.

Read some comments here and I wonder if its the same placed we stayed at.we loved our few nights here.from the creaking floor boards on our walk to our room to all the stunning photos of years gone by.had a great room,Richard executive, third floor, bed was great, room was well over sized.yeah the place is old and a little rough around the edges in places but life would be pretty boring without the charm of old hotels like these.take it for what it is and embrace it.

Room Tip: My tip is stay above the 2nd floor, nicer rooms and quite.

I stayed at the Astor House with my husband for 2 nights. It is very close to the Bund but is about a 20 minute walk to the nearest subway. I did appreciate the history of the hotel and the very large room with lots of windows. However, those windows brought in street noise (glad I brought earplugs and sleeping pills). The bathroom was also a nice size but the tub had been badly re-glazed. This hotel shows its age - I felt like I was staying in an old ghost haunted relic. Charlie Chaplin stayed here and so did Ulysses S Grant. It seems as though the place hasn't changed since then - in a not so great way. I will probably spend more money and stay somewhere more modern and central next time I visit Shanghai. I can't say I didn't enjoy my stay in the "Haunted Mansion" but I won't be doing it again.
