“Grand old hotel”

You can tell right away this hotel was top-notch in it's day. The lobby is impressive. Our room was large and clean, the beds comfortable. Maybe we had an updated room? The bathroom was also good sized and clean. Loved the combo Chinese/American breakfast. Great location if you want to walk the Bund, but rather a long walk to the subway.

For this trip to Shanghai, we wanted to stay in a historic hotel. We thought of staying at the Peace Hotel, remembering on my last trip to Shanghai that it was historical and located conveniently by the Bund but since the Fairmont group acquired and refurbished the property, rates have become quite steep, and so we looks for other possibilities.

We stumbled on the Astor House Hotel and its reviews in TripAdvisor, a very reasonably-priced historical hotel, also near the Bund, and decided to stay here for 2 nights.

It was already late at night when our flight got in to Shanghai, and we arrived at Astor House past midnight. The classical baroque facade of the building, the lobby, the corridors, the stairs, and the rooms certainly brings you back to 100 years past. I imagined people in the lobby dressed in period clothing while the music was playing from a quartet.

Unfortunately, the room that was assigned to us didn't have a view. It was a big, high-ceilinged room, with very old, wide wooden planks as flooring, and a door leading to another room (They say that this used to be the bathroom a long time ago) with adjoining doors and frosted windows, covered with drapes. Since we arrived at night, the rooms and corridors looked spooky, like a setting for a horror movie. I guess it just needs getting used to as we didn't feel that way anymore the rest of our stay.

The following day we walked around the area and the hotel is just a bridge away from the Bund. Very good area if you want to walk around the Bund. This hotel is the first western hotel in Shanghai since it became a trading port. Built in 1857, it use to be the most deluxe hotel in the city and one of the best in the far east. They even have photographs of famous people who have stayed in their hotel, like Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein, and former U.S. president Ulysses Grant.

I believe that, with our low room rate, we were given the rooms at the back and without a view. If you are planning to experience this hotel, book in the room where Albert Einstein or Charlie Chaplin stayed in. Their names are indicated on plaques beside the room's doors. We would have booked in one of these rooms had we known ahead of time. Now, I'm not certain if these rooms have a view but at least it's historical, which is our point in staying at this hotel.

If you plan to stay in Shanghai for several days and would like to explore the Bund area, a night or two in this good-value hotel will be an experience of a bygone era.

Room Tip: Get a room with a history, like the rooms where Charlie Chaplin or Albert Einstein stayed at.

Loved this hotel, it oozes charm of yesteryear.
The room was delightful, beautifully furnished with comfy bed, tv , and quality furniture. Plenty of space to spread out, and the bathroom alone was delux !The bed was so comfortbale, and the linen crisp and new.
The breakfast was go0d and had a selection of both Asian and western choices. All staff were warm and helpful. We found the coffee shop great value , and a bit of light relief when looking for food to suit a western palate.
definitely recommend this hotel if you want to escape the sterile sameness of most 5 star places

The location of the hotel was great, near the Bund. The beds were very comfortable and the big shower room was nice and modern. However, the rooms were too large, dirty and had no space to put clothes except one small wardrobe. The carpet on the stairs was grubby and tatty. We stayed in March and the lobby and the long hallway to our bedroom was very cold. We asked if we could have a chest of drawers for our clothes but the manager said they don't ever provide these in the bedrooms. Free wi-fi but it was only available in the lobby which was too cold to sit in. The manger and all the male staff were wearing big heavy wool coats in the lobby and told us that we would have to buy something to eat/drink if we wanted to use the wi-fi in the slightly warmer bar or cafe. Management and most of the staff were quite unfriendly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view as our room looked onto the back of other buildings but the windows had f...

I was impressed with the size of the room. It was HUGE. The deco and the overall feel of the hotel was warm.
When I am next in Shanghai I will stay there again.Being on the Bund there was a lovely view of the river and the futurist TV tower on the other side of the river.

Room Tip: The gift shop is a little expensive. If you go around the block the same things are alot cheaper.

How is this Hotel #1 for speciality lodging??? I am no stranger to staying in hotels in China. So, my review is not biased culturally. The hotel is close to the Bund, I will give it that. But, the rooms are cold and dirty. As in we wouldn't take our shoes off. We didn't unpack our suitcases for fear of our clean clothes being soiled by the dust. Cold and uninspiring are the adjectives for this hotel. Astor house is an old building that needs renovations. Or at least a good cleaning, and nice bedding. The beds were not comfy, rather just old. No amenities. Service very poor, as in the help is not interested in really helping. This COULD be a great hotel. But, given it's present condition, we will never stay here again.
