Stayed at the Peace Hotel last November for my wife's birthday. The hotel itself has been beautifully restored and we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a small suite which perfectly combined art deco style with modern conveniences. Facilities wise there is a nice indoor pool and gym. We also tried the F and B restaurants which were good. The only let down is that some of the service levels both in the restaurant and front desk were a bit disappointing and didn't quite match up to the quality of the hotel.

The beautiful Fairmont Peace Hotel on the Bund in Shanghai is an Art Deco lovers' paradise. The Fairmont restored the famous Cathay Hotel, 1929 era back to the glory days. They retained as much of the original interior and reproduced the remainder to the 1920-30s days. The room was very spacious, with separate shower and claw foot whirlpool bathtub. Gingko leaves decorated the lush carpet, and bedside lamps were distinctive pink/red glass. Patterns on the furniture were traditional art deco. The lobby and public areas were magnificient with large murals, chandeliers and beautifully carved doors. I was in heaven as I love this art period. Even the dishes in the cafe followed the same style. You could really dream of all the important Chinese and Western visitors in its hayday, and certainly see why socialites today would also stay here. Stepping outside onto the Bund and experiencing the view of the buildings across the water, especially lit up at night certainly added to the ambience of the trip. Not a negative word could be said about the trip.

The hotel is superbly located within walking distance of the river. the main shopping arcades and, best of all, the old town. The rooms and bathrooms are large and extremely well furnished and the television over the bath was a good way of catching up with CNN. Obviously, the prices reflect the luxury but the company got a great deal on 150 rooms. It is a stunning hotel which compares favourably to other 5 stars in the West.

Room Tip: The rooms with a view over the river to the business district are few and far between. My room over...

A magnificent hotel and absolutely worth a visit. The Champagne cocktails however were extortionately priced. We wondered why an alternative waiter visited our table to ask us if that was what we had ordered. If money is no problem go on...

The rating of poor is attributed to the price of that bloody champagne cocktail and it was my round...hmmmm, no surprise there then!

The Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai has an excellent location off the historic Bund. Founded in the 1920s by the British businessman Victor Sassoon, the property was renovated recently with great attention to detail. The result is terrific. Staying here, you can imagine socialites from China and the West joining for cocktails and dancing. In the breakfast room on an upper floor, you see red kites being flown over the river. In my mind, it is the place to stay in Shanghai.
