“classic hotel in Former French Concession Area - choose the 5* Cathay Garden wing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2013

the 5* garden wing was renovated maybe 10 years ago, so the rooms are a bit dull .... however I liked the area (quiet!!) and the architectonal style (Art Deco from 1920ies) and really enjoyed my stay as usual (I'm a frequent guest)

Go here if you look for affordable and quiet place in this area with atmosphere!

Breakfast is totally overpriced with 195CNY... go to one of the lovely old houses cafe in the area instead!

Expensive, old and stinky. Carpets are filthy and the rooms smells of vinegar and cigarettes. The staff isn't friendly and everything is either overpriced or you don't get what you pay for. 55 RMB (10$) per T shirt for laundry, meals are small and botched for the price you pay. Believe my partner and I, you better spend time somewhere else.

Okura gardens just opposite is a better option, has better food and a comfy lounge, better staff and modern rooms.

If you need fluent english speaking staff, avoid Jin Jiang hotel.

Founded in 1951 in a great location, this historical hotel deserves better management.

Rooms are ok, but there is nobody that can speak fluent english at all, there is no concierge

We arrived at 8 am for the first part of the trip, and there was no way we could do early check in except by paying 60usd, which after a 23hour trip fom mexico city, I decided to pay, again, this is not so 5 star hotel. Breakfast is just ok, not good but just ok.
At the end of the trip we stayed again, but this time we arrived at 9:30pm, and we asked the receptionist (woman) where could we go (since that hour is very late for dinner in china), her answer was NO, we even asked for a McDonalds or anything, her answer again was "now, too late, closed everything", then the manager aproached and just told us to walk on the street to the right, and there "might" be something for dinner.
I would recommend many other hotels before this one.

My room was comfortable and the air conditioning worked properly.
Also, I called the operator a couple times for assistance and they were responsive. In fact, I had better results calling via phone for assistance than talking to the people at the front desk.
I stayed in the Cathay Building (north). There are a few restaurants in the complex of the hotel (there are several buildings and a reception hall associated with this hotel) and I ate at a couple of them. One thing I noticed is the breakfast in the Cathay building had quite a few options but sometimes the food that was supposed to be hot was cold and the food that should be cold (like yogurt) was quite warm.
The grassy courtyard in the middle of the complex was nice to look at and was a welcome relief from too much concrete and building up around the city.

This hotel is a make over in an older building. Room was adequate, with all in room amenities. Staff Service was fine. A couple of irritants that would have made the stay more enjoyable. A toilet that would not flush properly which they could not fix. Air Conditioning that whined all night.
Good location. Good western style breakfast. Expensive in room WIFI.

Stayed four nights for a large conference. Nicely furnished room with big comfortable bed, bath and decent shower. Staff seemed pleasant and efficient. Breakfast buffet was a mixture, not so many international options and a few very Chinese offerings such as steamed chicken feet one morning. Fairly good conference facilities, all ran pretty smoothly. A short walk from a few restaurants and at least one English bar and taxis seemed to turn up at the door very regularly. Worth staying for the comfortable beds and the quiet environment.
