We spent our first two nights in Shanghai at this hotel. Other reviews have done a great job reviewing the property - we enjoyed our stay and thought the buffet breakfast served each morning was excellent and provided many other options besides Chinese food choices.

This hotel complex is very good, with comfortable, well-equipped rooms and excellent public spaces. Breakfast was excellent with a wide range of Chinese and Western options.

Location is excellent - just off Huahai Road, one of the main designer shopping streets in Shanghai.

Only niggle is that there is no free wi-fi anywhere in the hotel - it costs 90 Yuan for 24 hours. In a hotel of this quality it should be offered free of charge at least in the lobby.

Stayed two nights as part of a group. As has already been said, the hotel consists of several buildings, all in attractive art deco styles 1930s and surrounding lawns and gardens. The lobby of the building I was in was grandiose, evoking the period. My room was comfortable with good views over Shanghai. Complimentary bottled water was provided along with other usual commodities one would find in a hotel of this standard. The bed and linens were excellent. The breakfast room was expansive and welcoming with a large choice and range of dishes to attract all tastes - both eastern and western. Shanghai is an enormously confusing city and I don't think I could have managed to get around if it wasn't for my tour group. I walked to the subway station, which took only a few minutes and this is only 4/5 stops to the Pudong district, across the river. A very pleasant hotel in a smart area of this city.

Unlike most new shinny landmark hotels you find in Shanghai, especially in Pudong area. Jin Jiang is an old establishment dating back 1930s. The exterior of the buildings look old and perhaps grey but the interior are a lot better once you step inside.

I stayed here for a week at the Cathay Garden building, the service was great and the staff were very efficient and helpful. No problem.

Breakfast is predominately Asian with hot cooked food and it changes slightly every morning. You get a pianist at the lobby everyday which was nice, perhaps explains why the drinks are overpriced (?).

There's a charge for wifi per day and you can connect up to three devices with the same fee. If you travel around China, you will know that most hotel charges Wifi connection.

My room in the Cathay Gardens building seems a bit tired, it could do with a make over. Judging from some of the photos I see posted on the other buildings.

There are lots of restaurants all within short walking distance of the hotel and in the compound.

The clientele from what I can see is a good balance of business traveller and Asian tourists. The hotel is in a good location but if you are looking for a trendy, hip and contemporary hotel then this is not for you.

Room Tip: If you dont speak mandarin, best to get the hotel concierge to write down the hotel address and the BUILDING you are staying in, in Mandarin, to save the time and trouble conversing to the taxi driver.

A wonderful hotel steeped with history that has played its part in helping China build global ties.

This is less a hotel and more a hotel complex with multiple buildings (each with individual characteristics). We stayed in the Grosvenor Building which was built in the 1930's and has hosted heads of state on their visits to China over the decades.

It was simply superb. The entrance is opulent and the rooms are luxurious (as you would expect).

The location is ideal too. It is a block away (less than 100m) away from the Huahai road (with its upmarket shops...the Shanghai equivalent of Bond Street in London), 10 mins walk to the French Concession area and about an interesting hours walk from the Bund.

We stayed here for about 3.5 weeks - some of those days as extra due to having the misfortune of having our passports stolen whilst travelling. Whilst not all hotel staff spoke perfect English, the staff and duty managers were extremely helpful at trying to guide us through the layers of bureaucracy to resolve our predicament.

Xie xie Jin Jiang. Recommend this hotel if you want to experience Chinese hospitality (and not a Western chain in China) at a surprisingly reasonable price.

Room Tip: Rooms facing in to the complex are quiet. Rooms facing out enable you to people watch.
