“Great base from which to explore shanghai's many wonders”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

Staff were very attentive from the time of arrival right through to departure. The rooms are of a reasonable standard. There were some problems with the aircon throughout our stay and the hotel did their best to try and help relieve the situation by relocating us to other suites. Would highly recommend as a base to explore shanghai as it is right in the heart of the former French concession and close to a subway station and easy access to taxis.

I stayed in this hotel almost 4-5 trips over the past 2-3 years. The only reason is because the hotel is booked by the company. I cannot understand why we pick this hotel. Firstly, the hotel is really old. They are currently renovating the rooms which makes it better but the other amenities are old. The service is mediocre and if you look like an Asian, you'll probably won't get any notice. The swimming pool is large but you have to walk to another building, which is weird. Imagine walking outdoors in your toilet bathrobe. Their point system sucks (nothing like Starwood or Priority Club). The only upsides I can think of is the location. You can walk a few minute to great restaurants, pubs and MRT station. Overall, I won't recommend it. There are much better hotels in Shanghai than this one.

Dear NasiKandarIpoh,

Thank you for feedback. We are awfully sorry to learn that our staff's atitude was not satisfied. We will do our utmost effort to improve the service in the future.
Regarding your expression of the old hotel, some of the rooms have already been renovated and the balance will be finished within these years.
As the points system, we will submit to the relative department to improve immediately.
Thank you for your staying with us again. We really hope to show you our usual high standard when you return soon.

Yours Sincerely

the location was just right. so it was never to busy outside...right near the train if you need it and taxi's are always outside. Well I have just come back from shanghai and I think the hotel was really nice.
The bed was really comfortable, slept like a log, which I hardly every do.
I am always cold but the heating was perfect, The room clean was always up to scratch. Extras of anything we needed. The staff was helpful especially Frank at reception. He knows what’s happening, where and at what time and would organize tickets, taxi and everything. Just Great
I have to say breakfast itself was perfect. Although I do agree, the lady coordinating the restaurant was a bit of a tyrant to the staff. The Gym was good and I was pleasantly surprised about the pool that was big but not so with where it is, as it is on the grounds of the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask Frank at reception about whats happening where rather than the guy at the information desk

If have been coming to the Regal for over 15 years. The location is great however the last 3/4 times l have stayed here the service has been poor.
Compared to other Hotels in Shanghai and surrounding district there is a level of arrogance that reflects a place that probably doesn't have to work to hard to get visitors. Hence the lack of investment in updated facilities and management care to detail.
Sitting at the bar is no longer a pleasant, fun, experience. The staff treat the area as a social arena and the customers as a inconvenience. The evening entertainment has gone, probably to save cost, leaving a dull and unfriendly atmosphere.
The breakfast is more like a military experience rather than a luxury with immediate attention taken to avoid escape if you forget to sign the breakfast bill but little attention to refreshing the food and taking care of customer service.
In General the staff are all very young and not well disciplined. On Saturday evening there was a complete lack of Senior Management present leaving one young girl on reception having to say sorry more often than was comfortable.
The place needs some enthusiastic and disciplined management to inject that sharp attention to service.

Regal, unless you start taking care of your customer and their surrounding we will find an alternative..

Staff is friendly and helpful but this hotel needs to update its entire facility. I have been visiting this hotel for over a decade. While the entire Hotels in Shanghai scene are upgrading, this hotel has not change with time. Great location but is now outdated..... for example, they gym equipment are 10 years ago and the breakfast buffet choices are the same....

We stayed at the hotel with a tour group. When we first reached the hotel, we were quite pleased with the outlook but unfortunately, we found the bell boys not helpful at all in downloading our stuff from our tour bus. All of us have quite a lot of bags to carry out from the bus, but no one from the hotel offered to help.
I was quite disappointed too with the cafe's staff who left my parents ( at the age of 74 ) stood in the middle of the restaurant looking for a table for breakfast on their own for about 20 seconds. The hotel staff should lead customers to their tables, isn't it?
The heater of my room and my son's rooms were not functioning well during our two nights stayed even after we had complained to the reception. Already the weather was cold outside yet we were suffering the chill in the rooms.

Only credit is the hotel 's rooms are spacious.

I enjoyed my one night stay, thanks mainly to the excellent service at the hotel. The concierge was most thoughtful and always available to help. I was given an early check-in without any problems.
The location is good, especially for business and shopping purposes - perhaps I will stay closer to the Bund for more leisure activities.
The rooms are good - spacious and catering to most traveler needs. I tried the California restaurant at the hotel, which offered decent choices which were not prohibitively expensive. It is a good business hotel.
