“Another old lady in Shanghai”
Reviewed March 4, 2011

- parking space for cars: limited
+ check in & welcome: went smoothly, staff was very professional, friendly and fast
- room: small with old interior design, great view over the French Concession, the low ceilings add to a bit of claustrophobic feeling, mattresses are typical Japanese ones - very hard
+ concierge: very friendly and helpful
-- breakfast: as the Rose Cafe on the ground floor was closed, provisional breakfast took place in rearranged meeting rooms, food quality, presentation and choice was very poor

Stayed at Okura in Shanghai recently for a night. The hotel is an old stately property (for Shanghai anyway) with spacious grounds right smack in the middle of the French Concession. The Metro is literally around the corner and they have taxis waiting withing the hotel premises by the bucketload - a godsend for a city with notorious taxi scarcity during peak hours. Basically, the location is top notch.

Another minor benefit - the hotel has been around long enough that every taxi driver will know of it. Usually, taxi drivers have never heard of your hotel and you need to have the address for them to locate it - because Shanghai has developed at warp speed over the last decade.

Inside, the hotel basically resembles the Imperial and Okura hotels in Tokyo - a large stately Japanese hotel where all the staff speak Japanese (and English) and have been trained to Japanese service standards - no mean feat in China. There is even a Mitsukoshi inside.

Check-in was conducted smoothly with a minimum of fuss. Bellhop was courteous and friendly and spoke decent English. Room was spacious enough and clean. Not particularly stylish, but neat and setup like a typical 5-star Japanese hotel room. Amenities laid out efficiently for business usage. Bathroom was spotless and equipped with the high-tech Japanese toilets - heated seats, automated wash and dry etc - that non-Japanese find impenetrable. At least the flush is located in the normal place and works without any fancy electronics or histrionics.

The only spot of bother in the whole place was the bed. The mattress seems to be woefully inadequate for a top hotel - it's what I would expect to find in a 3-star place. Hard and springy and pretty thin. Pillows are adequate but no more. For the kind of prices that this hotel commands, this is a glaring anomaly in what should be the core product in any hotel.

Overall, this place is superb for business travellers (especially Japanese). Tourists will enjoy the shopping around the area - Huai Hai Rd is one of Shanghai's main shopping streets and is a block away. No chance to test the concierge, but that department is almost certain to be superb - Japanese excel at detailed service. With the caveat of the bed, highly recommended.

The Okura has a certain ambience and character. If you want something safe like a Holiday Inn, this isn't it.

I like its location, right on Maoming Rd and close to Nanjing Rd. It's in the city, but not a bad part of it. If I was booking a hotel for myself on vacation, I probably wouldn't stay here, but I don't mind when my company puts me up here. It's quiet, comfortable, so I get more work done.

I would criticize the staff for sometimes not being very flexible about their hotel rules.

The hotel has large and beautiful gardens but the rooms are looking rather tired for the high cost. Not good value compared to other five star hotels in Shanghai.

The fitness center is also an additional fee when most hotels include this in the room rate.

The location is excellent, but overall it looks a bit dated. My biggest problem I had with the staff. I booked the hotel on a discount rate through a Chinese website, elong.com, only to be told at checkout that the rate I booked for was for Chinese only.

Now, I work in China, I live in China and I pay tax in China, and I tried to convince the duty manager that this is a ridiculous, not to say racist, pricing strategy, but he refused to give me price I booked for and simply did not understand my point that it is plain and simple racist to charge people more simply because of their nationality.

For this reason alone, I will not stay here again.

The hotel is in an excellent location surrounded by lots of shops. Beautiful Garden in front and the hotel itself has an old world charm around it. Recently refurbished the rooms are nicely done and modern. Air-conditioning is working well and the bathroom is good. Wether the room or the air-conditioning I do not know but it os probably very dusty as I did do a lot of sneezing while I was there. This I never have. The beds are quite hard. All in all it is a nice place but lacking the comfort of the more modern hotels. Check out is a long process as they seem to spent a longtime finding all the paperwork and stapling it together. Car service to and from the airport is excellent. All in all good value for money as they offer good rates.

Beautifully presented, high quality hotel located a few minutes walk from a Metro station and a short taxi ride from the Bund. English is spoken but you have to get the right person. For example, they didnt get all the booking details correct. The one thing that really pissed me off was having to pay to use the pool. One of the reasons we choose this hotel was because the kids get a swim at the end of a sightseeing day. But I really didn't expect to have to pay 50 Yuan extra, may be its a Japanese thing! Given the huge range of hotels in Shanghai if I was coming again I would look elsewhere.
