“Loved coming back to Howie every night!”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

This was such a fantastic sanctuary to come back to every night. Really comfortable, plush rooms with a beautiful view of the Nanjing Rd pedestrian (shopping) mall below. Good choice if you're a light sleeper - didn't hear a sound from the hallway the entire time, due to the very thick carpets. Lovely lobby, very courteous bell staff, and all the little touches one would expect from a full service hotel.

Above average gym facility, fitted out with plenty of treadmills, weights, steppers and table tennis. There's even someone to give you a towel when you sign in. =)

Room service was tasty, and to my mind, not bad value as Shanghai in general is relatively expensive.

Hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the Bund - just turn right out of the lobby and follow the street the hotel is on to the riverside. Lovely!

This was my second stay at the Howard Johnson. I stayed here for three nights on business and had another great visit. The service at this hotel is excellent and I never had an issue communicating with the staff in English. The room is comfortable and there is a lot of counter space in the bathroom (something that I love!). The WiFi is free and worked well. My only complaint is that the A/C did not work well while I was there. Although I could adjust the thermostat, it stayed at 23 C even though the fan ran and ran. Maybe it's the time of year. I was there in April. Last year I was there in May and the A/C worked great. So maybe it was turned off in April?

One thing to point out to any future guests: the lighting in the room is really odd - there is a master light control box on one of the nightstands and that controls MOST of the lights in the room (there are a lot of lights) but it doesn't seem to run everything. So give yourself time to figure it all out before you try to turn off the lights to go to sleep. :-)

The hotel has a spa and a great looking indoor pool but unfortunately, I never had time to use it. Breakfast is very expensive so I didn't try it. There is a Starbucks right off the lobby and that is where I got my breakfast each morning.

The hotel is very centrally located. It is a short cab ride from The Bund (cost is a whopping 14 RMB). It is also a block from the pedestrian market on Nanjing Road. But be aware that it is in a busy part of town and cabs can sometimes be difficult to hail from there.

Overall, I really like this hotel and I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Shanghai!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front of the hotel. The back looks out onto some ugly apartment buildings.

Unless you're on an expense account, don't go with the breakfast or eat at the hotel. It's outrageously priced for what you get. Out of all of the hotels we stayed at on our tour of China, the breakfast here was the poorest. There are many great restaurants in the area where you can eat for a fraction of the price (check out Jamaica Blue a few blocks up the street).

The hotel itself is nice and it's quiet. We did not have any issues with our room. The location is EXCELLENT - about a 15 minute walk to the Bund and right on the major pedestrian street.

the hotel itself is ok, nice building and decorations and good location, but on several occasions of staying there in the past year I get a big disappointment every time again when using the spa ( sauna, swimming pool). For this level of hotel and the price charged this facility should at least be reasonable. The biggest problem is that this facility is staffed by people who still think that they work in a Chinese guesthouse back in 1976: you should be happy to be here and not bother us. These people certainly do not know what an average guest is paying per day as they know nothing else either. This time there was no cold water and the drain did not work. In a normal hotel of this rating this would certainly not happen at the same time and certainly one word would be enough to put staff to action. In this hotel staff echoes your remark and think that that closes the issue. After intensive arguing the technical department came into action , all in all this cost me one complete hour! Several other guests just left. The hotels is very lucky with such 1976 customers but in my case I will make sure anyone planning to stay here is informed correctly. When making a remark to reception desk staff it became clear that these people do not even know who the general manager is. Some investigation learns that this hotel has a few different websites without any mentioning of the managers name. The website english text is also in 1976 china guesthouse style and has not been updated since 2008. Web Links are all to Guangzhou domestic hotel chains. Then on linked-in I find mr Erik Rufer claiming to be the GM since 2010. Education: the swiss hotel school. He must have been too busy in the last 4 years to introduce himself to his staff or take a glimpse on the website....According to me this stinks - he is probably a so called P.O.Box manager, if not I would ask my hotel school fees back immediately if I were him

the hotel is nice and the location is very close to the nanjing west road walking/shopping street.
internet access is stable and fast
breakfast could be improved with more selection
it would be great if the room dinning comes with more bargain and selection

Not too much to say - lovely hotel - excellent breakfast great choices. Really good location for everything - good value, would definitely recommend this hotel. Just a few doors from a great Irish bar and a short walk from the river.

We stayed here for four nights in May. Big hotel right in the centre of the action. Good facilities and friendly staff. The room was spacious and the bed, although hard, was very comfortable. The 'extras' were expensive, such as laundry (£2 for a pair of pants) and mini bar.
