“Excellent Location, good stay”
Reviewed March 31, 2010

We are a young gay couple looking for a reasonable balance of comfort, convenience and value on our big cities excursion. We stayed at the Shanghai Hilton mid March for a week and were very pleased with our stay. We got the reservation from Priceline (knowing the likelihood of landing here) so the bargain bottom price doesn’t hurt either.

The hotel is close to the convergence point of the three main districts for traveller: Huangpu (People’s Square/Nanjing Rd pedestrian mall/Bund/old city), Luwan (the old French Concession, Huaihui Rd shopping, and for us, the various gay bars) and JingAn (various key historical sites), which makes it extremely convenient no matter where you want to go. It is about a three-minute walk from the JingAn subway station (which is on the key subway Line 2 and also service by the new Line 7). If you are a little more adventurous, there are also all sorts of bus lines running through Yanan Rd (just north of the hotel) or Huaihui Rd (about 5 minutes walk south).

Being the oldest 5-star international-chain in Shanghai, its age does show and it is not as fancy as some of the other 5-star international-chain hotels. However, it is perfectly “up-to-code” as an upscale hotel. The room we got was on the 24 floor (so good view to Huangpu area), very spacious and very clean. The furniture and the bathroom are a little dated but are perfectly comfortable/functional. Housekeeping happens twice a day (once around 7 in the evening), which we found a little excessive.

The gym/pool/spa were also excellent and really up to date (the gym in particular was pretty impressive for hotel gym). Did not try the restaurants, but the Sunday brunch (completed with a string quartet) looked pretty impressive.

This was my third stay at this hotel and the hotel is getting even better. There were a few slightly dated rooms which have been renovated. The Executive Lounge is huge and really one of the best. Its good good free wireless internet. Its an excellent location to explore the French Concession area of Shanghai.

Good swimming pool and spa. The Leonardo's restaurant, which is very expensive, was a bit disppointing with its service and attitude.

The jazz bar is as good as ever.

We stayed at the Shanghai Hilton in March 2010 after a exhausting 2,5 month trip around Asia-Pacific. The hotel was the last one on our tour and the staff did a great job in pleasing us and our two children (2 and 5 years old).

The service and fluent, rooms were clean and in good condition and the gym+pool-spa were great. The concierge and the front door staff did a great job in taking care of us.

The only negative side to our side was that the executive lounge did not accept young children at all. We are used to visiting the executive lounge before 5pm to have an afternoon snack or something and this time the lounge was not accessible to us. Minor discomfort, no biggie - but still.

We would most likely stay again at this hotel the next time we visit Shanghai.

This hotel was exactly what I was looking for! Work hard during the day, go out at night, close to everything. I was in Pudong before, but that’s so far away from the action. This hotel is right in the middle of it! You have to make sure you get access to the club lounge, you can pay a little extra on check in and get this benefit!!! Great service, great breakfast (included) and cocktails also included up there! I have travelled to China extensively, and it is hard to find everything you need in 1 place, here you have it... final tip, a little hidden in the corner, but great Italian restaurant! Try talking to the staff for advice, they are great and very knowledgeable about shanghai!

The hotel offers decent rooms, highlight of the room being the large flat screen TV. The Executive rooms provide access to the Executive lounge located on the 34th Floor which has splendid views of downtown Shanghai. The hotel has a great fitness centre along with an indoor pool & a spa located on the 4th floor. Overall a pleasant experience.

  • Liked — Centrally located
  • Disliked — The decor could have been a bit more contemporary.

I was met at the airport and directed to the correct buss and to the hotel. The rooms were very well kept and the food was very good. I especially loved the dark rolls with nuts baked inside, I could live on them alone.I stayed there many times during the 80's and loved it every time..
