As an expat living in Shanghai for the past four years, we've seen and experienced what we called Shang-highs and Shang-lows. Tonight, we hit the lowest of Shang-lows of our restaurant experience in four years. We went to the The House of Roosevelt on the Bund for a nice evening out for food and drinks and it was everything but nice. We got to the rooftop terrace and only thing that was nice was the weather - which The House Roosevelt had nothing to do with. We ordered very dry and very cold classic martini and what we got was tap water warm martini that was barely drinkable. It was so bad that we had to ask for ice!! When we ordered our drinks, we also ordered some food from the bar menu - nothing shocking, just fries and "truffle sliders" which were quarter size mini burgers. The fries took about 15 minutes - that we didn't mind, but the "truffle slider" took 45 minutes!!!!! And it was expensive - 88 RMB ($14.00)!!!!!! We asked three different times when our sliders will be ready, and they kept saying "they are on their way". When our quarter size "truffle sliders" finally came, the waiter literally threw them on the table - I kid you not, as some of us, the expats, know that this is a very common practice in local CHINESE restaurants, but not so called "western" style restaurants. We asked for ketchup and mustard, and that took another 5 minutes - but they came with ketchup only. Additional 2 minutes passed by and we got our mustard - of course no pleasantries from the wait staff. With the great anticipation, we took our first bite of our "truffle slider" and it was like eating cardboard!!! Their food was worse than what you'd get at McDonald's! Even if the food was bad, if the service was up to the name sake, we would have been happy, but by far, it was the worst service we have experienced (both unfriendliness and unprofessionalism) in four years that we've lived in Shanghai. They should have taken more pride in what they serve and how they conduct their business. It was a HUGE disappointment and I am deeply insulted that they advertise as a premier western restaurant in Shanghai - you could have gotten better food and better service from Kentucky Fried Chicken!! When in Shanghai, skip the House of Roosevelt, go straight to KFC!
