WOW is all I can say! What an enjoyable experience. I was looking for a special Sushi restaurant to dine at in Shanghai and someone told me to go here. It is a small restaurant and reservations are a MUST as the restaurant only seats about 12 people max. Most of the seating is around the sushi bar. Yes, the price is high for Shanghai Sushi, but let me tell you it is worth every dollar;the fixed price is about 800RNB. I didn't even ask what was included and was blown away with food that was thrown at me. It was mostly sushi and sashimi with 3-5 choices of from the kitchen. I was expecting only sushi and was filled with joy by the kitchen food as well. The owner of the restaurant is the main sushi chef and he happens the be a happy outgoing character and will make you feel at home. Great People! If your main language is English, so is his, so you won't have trouble communicating with him. The fish was all highest quality and not cheap varieties....I am a big eater and usually leave a sushi dinner like I can eat more; NOT HERE! I was fed well. I got my value's worth at the meal. The chef went out of his way to offer me different kinds of fish based on what I wanted! That was cool. People who say the price is too much for Sushi in Shanghai, I understand. This restaurant is only for people who can understand what a fine Sushi meal is and the difference from basic fish to select cuts and prime variety. Soooooooo, if you want an unbelievable Sushi meal, go here. You will leave a very happy person.

Even finding this place is a challenge. Located above Donghu Lu's El Wily, this genuinely authentic Japanese restaurant is not for the average man. In both taste and damage to your wallet.

Meals are customized to every single individual, the chef remembers everyone by heart, and will know if you haven't shown up before and even remembers your preferences. with all the traditional Edo style sushi making mixed in with 21st century techniques to suit modern tastebuds, Sushi Oyama really outdoes every other restaurant by miles. With the chef's simple motto of "water and salt", the food is light, well seasoned, and stunningly fresh to accentuate all the flavors.

But be warned, after this meal, you might never feel the same about all the other sub-par sushi bars ever again.

The restaurant is located on the second floor of the building housing El Willy Restaurant on Donghu Road. Restaurant consists of a number of private rooms with Japanese floor style seating. Staff all dress in traditional Japanese clothes.
There is a set menu, which changes according to fish flown in fresh from Japan that day.

We had:
Appetizer: Vinegared mozuku seaweed salad, monk fish liver with citrus soy sauce
Assorted Sashimi
Grilled salted Japanese mackerel
Sushi: Blue fin middle fatty tuna, bonito baby tuna, and barfin flounder
Japanese blue crab & sea urchin & salmon roe bowl with Yuzu flavor
Matsutake mushroom & wild red prawn
More Sushi: blue fin top fatty tuna, ark shell, sweet botan shrimp
Signature dish: chopped ootoro with quail egg flavored with japanese snow crab
Shrimp head with kelp & vegetable miso soup
Dessert: Citron sorbet

Every single dish tasted great along with a range of sake choices. Service was excellent.

Price was around 800 RMB per person, not cheap, but very much worth it.
