Having been in China for 14 days the family agreed to visit Lost Heaven for its reputation for 'sanitised' fair. Large bar and terrace but no views as such and far better on The Bund.
The menus was good and uncomplicated. As previous reviewers have stated the Restaurant itself is huge but unlike some I liked the noise and atmosphere.
Not great that a Chinese restaurant ran out of Chicken Satay at 7.00pm! Otherwise the selection of lamb samosas, veg spring rolls and ham sandwich type things could not really have been less Chinese. All the usuals like ribs etc are there. All very good but this really is very western, the fact so many Chinese were here simply demonstrates the same. It is no coincidence that in China an aspiration for all things western pervades the upper working and newly middle classes.
For the mains I was encouraged to stick with chicken, the family said no beef or pork which was a bit of a disappointment however the Chicken in Soy Sauce and Chicken with Chili and Garlic were very good as was the Brocoli with Garlic and the Vegetable Fried Rice.
You should also be aware that as with all restaurants in China your food arrived when it's ready. Not always in the order you want it and the rice was the second to last dish followed a considerable time later by the Chicken in Soy. I am not talking a few minutes but 10 plus!
I was touched that in spite of the hideous smells and hygiene seen in Xian and actually some restaurants in Beijing we went Chinese but actually we could have been in Beaconsfield or Cookham!
It's Ok but does not merit it's reputation based on tonight!
