“Western Chinese Food with Chinese Service”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

Having been in China for 14 days the family agreed to visit Lost Heaven for its reputation for 'sanitised' fair. Large bar and terrace but no views as such and far better on The Bund.

The menus was good and uncomplicated. As previous reviewers have stated the Restaurant itself is huge but unlike some I liked the noise and atmosphere.

Not great that a Chinese restaurant ran out of Chicken Satay at 7.00pm! Otherwise the selection of lamb samosas, veg spring rolls and ham sandwich type things could not really have been less Chinese. All the usuals like ribs etc are there. All very good but this really is very western, the fact so many Chinese were here simply demonstrates the same. It is no coincidence that in China an aspiration for all things western pervades the upper working and newly middle classes.

For the mains I was encouraged to stick with chicken, the family said no beef or pork which was a bit of a disappointment however the Chicken in Soy Sauce and Chicken with Chili and Garlic were very good as was the Brocoli with Garlic and the Vegetable Fried Rice.

You should also be aware that as with all restaurants in China your food arrived when it's ready. Not always in the order you want it and the rice was the second to last dish followed a considerable time later by the Chicken in Soy. I am not talking a few minutes but 10 plus!

I was touched that in spite of the hideous smells and hygiene seen in Xian and actually some restaurants in Beijing we went Chinese but actually we could have been in Beaconsfield or Cookham!

It's Ok but does not merit it's reputation based on tonight!

“Overhyped....”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

This place is so kitschy that you might as well be at a them park. I found so such decor anywhere in Yunnan. But people seem to love it because it is packed. The food is so soso that I cannot even remember much...except a dish with lots of local Yunnan truffles...which was actually nice as it was plentiful as promised. Service is well-trained and fun Disney atmosphere...but for real food...go elsewhere.

“Cool spot for cocktails”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

We dashed into Lost Heaven near the Bund to have a cocktail and escape the searing August heat. We walked upstairs to the outdoor terrace bar that has a fantastic view of the building with the crown on top (don't know the name), but the heat drove us inside to the air conditioning. The main bar is large and dark with stunning large-scale photos on the wall. We had gin fizz concoctions and relaxed, thankful for cool air and that we had escaped the hordes of people on the Bund.

“Love coming here again”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

Bringing visitors to this restaurant never goes wrong, my frequent compliant here is the noise level, but fortunately this time were shown a table towards the side, away from the main hall. Quality of food is still very good, cuisine is Yunnan but apparently its a bit westernised. Drinks afterwards can start on the third floor lounge,or other watering holes on the Bund are within a ten minute stroll. Reservations recommended as the place is always full.

“Very good”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

Very good, interesting food in a great location just off the Bund (and we were staying just next door at the Zero Page hotel). We made a reservation for Sunday lunch; not at all necessary, as the place is huge and there were few diners. Note: very dark, so I would ask for a window seat during the day. Also, if you have problems seeing in the dark, take a friend with you to the bathroom, which is very dimly lit.
