“Fantastic hostel with great location and service to match!”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

Returning to Shanghai for the second time while traveling through China for a month, myself and my buddy decided to change locations (being in Jing An before) and move closer to the Bund and riverside. We stayed at Mingtown Nanjing Road for 2 nights at 50 RMB per night (normally 55 but we are Hosteling International members) and found it to be nearly perfect! The hostel is a minute walk to Nanjing East subway station and pedestrian walk and less than a 5 minute walk to the Bund - a great position for those wanting a central location with transport, sights and food nearby.

Our room was a 6-bed dorm with lockers, bedside shelf and lamp. There were several bathrooms on our floor to be used and they always seemed to be vacant as well as clean with 24 hr hot water. There is nice common, self-service kitchen with a fridge, microwave, stove and plenty of cooking equipment, which we found a great help. Mingtown Hostel also has fast wifi that reaches the room and a pool table.

The service was top notch, with the staff always being very helpful with writing things out in Chinese to make our lives easier and when my friend lost his phone on the street, the guy at reception was fantastic with helping us track it down and even spoke to the guy who found the phone in Chinese to help us meet up the same night! The only negative thing I have to comment on was the noise in the morning. Our room was along the street and there was a hefty amount of loud traffic in the morning that woke me up several times. Regarding food, the restaurant downstairs we found to be a bit too expensive but discovered at night there are some amazing and cheap dumpling and fried noodles/rice street-vendors at the intersection near the hostel - definitely worth checking out!

Overall, we are very happy with our time at Mingtown Nanjing Road Hostel and would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone heading over to Shanghai in need of cheap, and great value accommodation! Thanks.

Room Tip: If possible, get a room away from the main road for a more comfortable sleep-in.

This hostel is very clean and well located for travel in Shanghai. It's very close to a subway station and right off of Nanjing Road that has all the shops and restaurants and also no car traffic which is nice. It's also just a short walk to the Bund and walks along the river. They serve decent food at the bar inside the hostel and for dinner there's a guy right across the street that does a great stir fry for a cheap price. The room I had was nice with multiple beds and the shared bathroom/showers were right outside the room but inside a door so as to make them somewhat private just to our room. The staff is friendly and speaks good English. One of the girls was even nice enough to come across the street with me to help me buy a Sim card for my phone. The sitting area is nice and comfortable with many jacks for plugging in your laptop/tablet as well as two computers to use for free. I'd recommend this place to anyone wanting a nice place at a decent price in the heart of Shanghai.

What makes or breaks a property is the combination of cleanliness of facilities and the staff--those are the main points for which you're using the hostel, as a home and for help. The staff here talks to you, asks your opinion of the advice they had just given you, and treats you not only as a guest but as a person.

The room was a 6-bed dorm and really squished: I've stayed in places twice that size at least for half the price, but it's Shanghai in the new year, there wasn't much I could do. The food is good and priced well for how delicious it is and portion size, but the drinks were expensive.

We spent 6 nights in this comfortable inn very close to MTR and Nanjing road. We had a private double ensuite and it really surprised with its modern and clean look. There was a wooden floor and the decoration was minimal but still very nice. Shower was also very nice, almost better than what we have at home except the water pressure was a bit low. Only negative thing is that the walls seem to be pretty thin. If you get a room facing the road, truck sounds will hear pretty loud.

Overall we were very happy with the hostel and we really thought we got value for our money.
