“Excellent Water Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013

Definitely a great place to visit when in Shanghai. The town is full of old houses and bridges and they have countless small shops selling all kinds of things. Quite a few charming cafes and tea houses are scattered around as well. There are boat rides which are definitely worth taking. I recommend you take the boat ride early so that you can get a sense of the place and then access those areas by walking around. We took a bus and it was fast and convenient and the place is just a short walk from the bus station. when you exit make sure you keep walking left until you see the entrance. Take your time and notice the details and you will be rewarded with a great experience. Highly recommended.

“Best tour guide in China”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

We have been living in Shanghai for 6 months and wanted to tour Shanghai and the surrounding area from the perspective of a local Guide. Annie was amazing! We made the tour challenging as we toured over Chinese New Year. Annie had interesting facts; knew the area; was able to call ahead to ensure the attractions were open; and helped us buy a much needed coat for our daughter. We saw downtown Shanghai, Songjiang film studio, Yu Gardens, and the back alleys of daily life in Shanghai and Hangzhou. Annie was a great guide for our trip. If you want to really tour Shanghai, Annie is the best choice!

“More Than Just a Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2013

Wow, are we happy that we chose Shanhai-Lander and requested Jean Liu for our two day tour. First off, the email communication with this company was excellent. We would always receive quick replies and Jean Liu would always answer all of our questions while we were going back and forth trying to customize our two day tour. It was evident that she took all of our preferences into consideration in creating our itinerary.

On our first day, we had a city tour around Shanghai with Jean Liu. The tour was mostly a walking tour (but we did use some public transportation to a few of the spots). She promptly picked us up at our hotel in the morning and discussed our itinerary before we began, to make sure we were happy with it. We visited the Bund area, took a stroll through Nanjing Road, took a ferry to the older part of Shanghai, visited residential parts of town, local markets, a local pet market (it is unreal how the Shanghai people go crazy over their crickets and birds), Yuyuan Garden, XinTianDi, Fuxing Park, and People's Square and walked through the French Concession. Also, we were not pressured to go to any stores or to buy anything (which was very important to us because we had specifically told her we were not interested in shopping). She also knew that we had a particular interest in local cuisine and helped us choose from different traditional delicacies to try. She took us to a delicious dumpling restaurant where we were the only tourists amongst slurping locals. The first day of our tour lasted about eight hours and at the end of the day we were amazed at how much we did. We never could have done so much without Jean Liu's help.

For our second tour, we opted to visit the floating market village, ZhuJiaJiao, for a half day as we had a late afternoon flight to Cambodia catch. We were picked up by Jean Liu and our driver in a clean and comfortable van. The village was a little over an hour away. Although we had read online to avoid visiting this village during the weekends, unfortunately our schedule only allowed us to visit on a Saturday. The floating village was extremely busy and a little too touristy for our liking. It is ideal for shoppers (which we are not) but still, it was fascinating to see and ultimately we were glad we chose to visit it. Jean Liu sensed right away that we were not "feeling" all the crowds and she took it upon herself to take us to the quiet areas of the village where we could get away from the noise. She also took us to places where we captured some beautiful pictures. Jean Liu was very informative once again during our second tour. She discussed the local cuisines and took us to a restaurant where we tried dishes that were customary to the village. We also told her that we would like to unwind in one of the village's tea houses and she took us to a charming tea house (where we sat in a beautiful balcony overlooking a quiet canal) and spent about 1 1/2 hour chatting and telling stories. Being able to relax and talk to Jean Liu was one of the highlights of the day. The tour ended with Jean Liu taking us to the Maglev station (the high speed train) which took us straight to the airport (in 7 minutes). Jean Liu helped us purchase our tickets at the train station and even waved us off until we arrived to our corresponding train.

As for Jean Liu, her English was wonderful and she was very informative. It felt like we spent the day with a friend rather than a tour guide. Throughout our tour, she provided us with tips that helped us familiarize ourselves with where we were and the best ways to get around. She provided so much useful information, that when we arrived to Shanghai on the last leg of our SE Asia trip, we were constantly pointing out things that Jean Liu had taught us. We really felt that we got to know Shanghai that much more because of all the information and stories she shared with us. Jean Liu also provided us a wonderful restaurant recommendation which ended up being one of the best meals we had in Shanghai. Towards the end of our trip, we were having a hard time using our US phone in Laos to make calls into Shanghai for dinner reservations for when we returned to the city. We contacted Jean Liu, and she even made dinner reservations for us (days after our last tour with her ended).

We were so impressed with the company that we also used their airport service (which was quite reasonable compared to the airport transfer offered by our hotel). We had a professional driver, the same one who took us to the floating village, who waited for us with a sign with our name. We were very pleased with the airport transfer.

Thank you Jean Liu for making out trip to Shanghai so memorable. We truly enjoyed our two days with you and appreciate how you took all of our wishes into consideration. We can't thank you enough. Till next time, hopefully!
