I stayed one night in Shanghai at the Holiday Inn as part of a tour. We got up early and went up to the pool. Fantastic being so high up and it makes the heart jump to look down through the water. The hotel itself is also very nice, large rooms and good views from the pool deck. The breakfast we had was very good also. Shanghai though is all about going into the city centre at night, and the Holiday Inn is a fair way out. Overall, a very good western style hotel.

Room Tip: Insist ona king bed before hand and double check.

The most negative point about this hotel is the position that is faraway from the most important areas of this very large city. Around the hotel the guest is left with very little or no option in terms of restaurants or shopping malls and the only option is to take a taxi to reach a more hospitable area. As far as the hotel and its services are concerned, rooms are spacious and service levels are acceptable, though the language barrier also contributes to a difficulty in asking for services. The two restaurants are reasonable but certainly not great, one is providing average quality international cuisine and has the advantage of being open till late, whilst the other with local cuisine closes at 10PM but after 9.30PM it is impossible to order, quality of food was certainly not outstanding. A fact that I found quite disappointing was that, even one full day in advance, it was not possible to get a standard cab for the airport as the hour was too early and the only chance was the ridiculously expensive hotel cab. In general however with the above reserves, the hotel is not bad and relatively good value for money. If the guest is ready to spend some time and money on taxi transfers , then it can be recommended.

Thank you very much for staying at Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Kangqiao and also thanks for your comments. Actually, hotel is in the ideal location that only takes you 25 minutes to city center, People Square and 2 international airports. And for your convenience, our concierge is very pleased to help you to book a taxi if you would like to.We are so lucky that our Chinese restaurant, Guo Feng has Chef Leong, who is a Master Chef from Hong Kong and a Michelin star chef. The restaurant has an open kitchen and you can watch dim sum being made while enjoy the delicious food. But, we also offer room servcie if you need. Thanks again for your kind comments and generous recommendtion for your hotel. Looking forward to seeing you again once you are in Shanghai in the near future!

Being a platinum member I spend quite some time in Holiday Inn hotels all around the world, but this was was indeed outstanding. The hotel itself is amazing, a lobby being as decent as of any five star hotel in the world, an excellent restaurant and rooms you really enjoy your stay. The most amazing thing however is the pool in the 24th floor - with a glass bottom so you can watch what is going on some 60 meters below you while you are swimming. There are only two things I did not find "perfect" - it was a little bit chilly in the whole pool area and the breakfast is not providing enough international food - it is more focused on local cuisine - beside this, the hotel is amazing, especially because of the really caring employees.

They are advertising with this, and it is indeed the most interesting piece of the hotel - the swimming pool in the 24th floor with a glass botton you can look down from while you are swimming. But beside this unique feature the hotel features everything you are expecting from a decent hotel and pricewise it is really a bargain. Going to the international airport is also very convinient, so it is really worth to be considered for a business trip.

If you are new to China you should know that in this country the Holiday Inn hotels are much more elegant than in the US. I was surprised when I first moved here 3 years ago, but now I know that staying in a HI in China is a 4-star or better experience. This hotel was in the 'better' category. It is not in the main area of Pudong or Shanghai, but they do have a shuttle to the subway line that takes you directly into downtown Shanghai, and the service and quality are much, much higher than I have seen in comparably priced hotels in the city. I stayed here with my husband who had a weekend conference in the area. I came along for the ride and could not be happier with our 2-night stay! I am not sure where Harring10 stayed, but it was definitely NOT this Holiday Inn--the price is very reasonable here because, I imagine, it is out a ways in Pudong's suburbs-- and there aren't bathtubs but large showers in the rooms. There is NOT a nightclub nearby, and there aren't a lot of Western bars (but there is a mall).
The best part of being outside the city is price, quality and service--all were superior at this HI. There is a grand entrance and everything seems brand new. It is very quiet--we came in on Friday night and left on Sunday--and I worked in the lounge one morning to get out of my room. I do not work well with noise and found the atmosphere quiet and elegant and easy to work in. It is a beautiful hotel. The next morning I took the hotel shuttle to the #2 subway line and for 5Y (less than a dollar) could go anywhere. It takes more time than it would in the city, but the pool alone would make it worth the trips! I have never seen a pool area like this--except in magazines. It has canopied king loungers and the most incredible pool deck--indoor and outdoor-on the 24th floor. It's all glass walls and a long pool that does indeed stick out over the edge of the hotel...I could not look down onto the city streets below as I don't do heights well, but it was magnificent without the added excitement of glass floors. Such a great place for families and couples--you will have a hard time getting your kids to go anywhere else!
SUPERIOR SERVICE! Such quiet efficiency and courtesy from all the staff we encountered, and an amazing response when we had a negative experience with a cab driver: these drivers aren't allowed on hotel property so we walked out to take one and for the 1st time in 3 years the cabbie ran us around and a 10-min journey turned into a 40 min. one, with the resulting high price (for China). I was pretty frustrated when we returned to the hotel, and I spoke with the person in charge. He explained what they could do for us--call and complain and get our money back--and was very helpful and apologetic (wasn't hotel's fault). I eventually chalked it up to life--who knew if he really was that clueless?--and enjoyed the rest of our evening. Later we received a call apologizing for the problem and inviting us to the Executive Lounge for drinks and breakfast the next morning as their way of improving our experience. There were all kinds of drinks available there. We really weren't upset when we left the manager earlier in the evening--it was the time wasted that bothered me, not the $6--but they went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience that night. Superior service!
The king room was beautiful with large windows and a great bed. There IS a privacy curtain between the bath and bedroom and a nice sitting/work area. It is clean and beautiful. The food was very good--the same quality as we've seen in high-end hotels in China and the US--there are just more Chinese-tailored offerings. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and would happily come back and bring friends with us. This hotel is superior!

We really enjoyed this hotel. We belong to H.I. loyalty program and got a great deal on the points. When we arrived at the airport it was late and the flight was very long. We saw some men holding hotel signs on way out and asked about shuttle to our H.I. We then made the mistake of agreeing to go by “private car” to the hotel and ended up paying $70 usd for a ride that would probably only have cost us $7 to go by cab. I guess the only advantage was that we did avoid the taxi queue which at times can be very long (sometimes up to 30-45 minutes). Also make sure to have the name of the hotel along with the address written in Chinese, with you to give to the cab driver as you are unlike to find any that understand English, and there are many H.I.'s in Shanghai. The hotel was very clean and we had a great room with very comfy beds and pillows. However, there was a lot of glass and little privacy in our king room. This was not a problem for us, but you might want to check with the hotel if you will be sharing a room with someone that requires more privacy. The wall was glass between the bedroom and the bathroom (and shower). If there were privacy screens, I did not notice them and I’m not sure if the double rooms are the same. It is not in downtown Shanghai, but that was fine with us. Breakfast was on the high side approx $20 usd pp. but did offer western choices including fried eggs, bacon, hash browns, fresh fruits, meats, cheeses, oatmeal and granola along with Chinese breakfast items. There is also all night room service but when we called they happened to be out of our first 2 choices (the lamb and salmon) but in all fairness it was already 11pm. The pool is amazing and is cantilevered out over the street with a glass bottom. There is a health club that looked good but we were informed by another guest there were no floor mats for stretching. Overall, our experience here was very good, service was good and we would likely stay here again if in Shanghai.

This hotel must be very new as everything looked pristine, the surrounding area has a few bars and restaurants which look quite good and easy for foreigners to use.

The room I had was stunning with a huge picture window looking out onto Shanghai city, I could look out from my huge and conformable bed and watch the city light up in the evening.

The breakfast section was not as good as the Marriott Courtyards' that I use but was still OK, the evening buffet selection was REALLY good for a foreigner, all-you.can eat selection with some excellent international dishes, I loved it.

The morning check out was a bit stressful, if you are a quiet person then you will find people pushing in front at the desk delaying your departure, and the process seemed slow & complicated with staff behind the desk looking nervous, this is an international problem but still frustrating and it is the last memory you take when leaving a hotel.

As said this hotel is stunning but it is out-of-the way, the most expensive taxi into town was 150 RMB, about $20, which if you go in and out a few times makes the place an expensive option. Ideally the hotel should run a shuttle.

Room Tip: If you have to travel in and out of town more than once in a day move closer
