“Touring Shanghai's Museum of hard knocks”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

A short time ago, I was taken on a chaperoned jaunt through Shanghai’s Kung Fu Museum by tour guide generalissimo Daniel Newman. Lying hidden away in the peaceful and leafy northern part of the city like some solitary monk, the Kung Fu Museum is usually empty and mercifully free of the hordes of noisy, flag-waving tourists you find polluting most of Shanghai’s historical sites. Daniel, himself a martial artist, was extremely knowledgeable and methodical while explaining the artful ways the Chinese have been bashing in their enemies and one another throughout the centuries. Thoroughness and fun are the main reasons Newman Tours—Daniel’s firm—is fast becoming highly reputable in China, recently earning glowing reviews from China Daily, CNN Travel, and The New York Times.

Not only was the tour packed with gory info (did you know the red tassel on a spear was used to stop the flow of blood from the blade getting to the wooden shaft? Nope, me neither), but it also gave a comprehensive overview of China’s martial arts culture, heritage, and accompanying variety of terrifying weaponry. For a self-respecting armchair fan of the flying kick such as myself, it was an afternoon well spent. Easily the funniest moment came at the end of the tour, when we took turns fighting a green screen virtual simulation of Bruce Lee. Bruce proved a tough adversary, until the only girl in our group defeated him by repeatedly beating him over the head with her handbag (below). No amount of exhaustive training could have prepared him for the wrath of her Longchamp. Ka-pow!

“The Bund Tour”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

Jay gave us an excellent tour of the Bund. He was very animated and engaging and had a huge amount of knowledge about the architecture, history and characters that shaped this fascinating area. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about the role of architecture in Chinese history. Well done and thank-you Newman Tours!

Terrific tour of the Bund and introduction to Pudong. Informative and animated guide called Jay. Lots of historical context and anecdote to bring the architecture alive. Highly recommended.

“Shanghai Gangster Tour”
Reviewed January 5, 2014

Our tour guide was Chloe. She was an excellent tour guide. Her humorous approach and friendly yet welcoming attitude helped the group gel that much sooner.

The tour is mainly walking on public roads and ended with a drink with Chloe performing some 'magic' tricks. We certainly found the tour to be informative, educational and fascinating. Well done!

She even went the extra mile and sent us the additional information relating to our questions.

Hope to see join Newmans again some time in the future.

“Best Museum Tour Ever”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

Just wanted to let you know we had a great tour at the Martial Arts Museum in Yangpu District Shanghai. The insight our group got into the world of martial arts was fabulous. Jack is a knowledgeable and friendly guide. He shared with us the history, knowledge of Chinese martial arts. He also made the museum visit more enjoyable for us by telling us the stories behind everything and showed us the illustrative videos and photos on iPad. We enjoyed the tour very much.
