I contacted Janny via Skype and arranged a last minute tour with Shanghai Pathways. My tour guide, Mary, showed up at my hotel a few minutes before 9 and we were off on an 8 hour tour of Shanghai. I was very impressed with Mary. Usually I drive the conversation with my boat loads of questions, but Mary answered questions for me that I didn't even know I had. The amount of detail she added to the numerous sites we visited was amazing. We spent the entire day walking the streets of Shanghai, which allowed Mary to discuss the minutia of Shanghai and Chinese life, from new shopping developments to the meaning of street sculptures. In fact, the only thing Mary was not conversant on was the Cricket Market: *boys* play with crickets, she shrugged dismissively. This is no small feat for an 8 hour “deep dive” into chinese culture. The area in and around Yu Yuan Garden was particularly fascinating. Mary and Shanghai Pathways certainly earned a five star rating.
