“Efficient and Modern”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2013

The train station is very efficient and modern with nice facilities, and a large number of trains traveling to different locations in China. There are vendors for food, drinks, and snacks.

“Rail travel, a fun alternative”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2013

Hongqiao train station is huge. Don't get intimidated by the crowds. Security check was really crowded when I was there.

There are three ways you can purchase tickets: online (but you'll need a local friend to book this for you as an ID would be required), via machine and at the counter. The lines for both were long when I was there. You can exchange your ticket for a free bottled water. The bullet train from Shanghai to Hangzhou and back are very nice and clean. Took first class going to Hangzhou and second class on the way back. There's really no big difference other than more leg room in the first class compartment. The second class compartment had a plug to charge your phone. It's a great way to travel. I've ridden bullet trains in Japan, Spain, France and Taiwan and their Chinese counterparts are just as good.

The only thing is that it can get pretty aggressive at the gate when lining up to board. But once you've shown your ticket and past the gate, things normalize at the platform while boarding the train. Just don't get upset and take it for what it is. Keep your sense of humor and have fun!
It's an adventure after all.

“Take the Train”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2013

The train station in China are huge. They are the biggest train stations I have ever seen. More like airports than train stations and very crowded. When purchasing your tickets make sure you are in the foreigner lane if you are not a Chinese National and have your passport. We took the train to Hangzhou, a quick 45 mins by train. It was great. The train was a fast, cheap and convenient way to travel. Traffic in China is a total mess!

“Efficient and huge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

This place is huge like an airport concourse, but efficient. Make sure you are on the foreigner line if you are not Chinese National, the information center is close to the ticket booth, and it is very modern and clean.

“Very Huge”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

I have been to Railway stations all over the world, but this one surely takes your breath away - very big, very tall and spacey. I guess, Chinese government does not have budget limitations as other world Governments.
