Originally established as the Grill House in 1933, the Cathay Room was where hotel founder and eccentric global traveller, Sir Victor Sassoon, dined with his highbrow friends in true style. Today, the revived Cathay Room embodies the same values of culinary vision, service excellence and social dining. Lunch Set Menu is served from 12 pm until 2:30 pm. You couldn't wish for a better combination of fine dining and top of the town views. Dining in the Cathay Room is a singular pleasure. Australian chef Nicolas Blair's fine cooking complements the reputation of the art deco delight that is the Fairmont Peace Hotel, a landmark property along the Bund.

We visited the Cathay room for a Friday lunch treat.
We chose a table on the terrace and it was a rare blue sky day in Shanghai that made for great views and a afternoon in the sun.
Service was great and Jan the waiter was very chatty. The place was quiet so he had plenty of time to chat.
The meal was superb with all the dishes cooked and presented to the highest standards.
For starters the belly pork was the tastiest I have ever tasted and the deconstructed Niçoise salad was very elegant and the tuna was superb.
For the main courses we had sea bass was great and the herb crusted lamb was cooked to my liking and even better than my previous favorite at the Meat. The seafood risotto was great and it was difficult to decide the best dish.
The deserts were very fancy and flavorsome.
A great value lunch in a great place.
The set lunch menu also included a drink which added to the feeling of good value.

Superb cuisine! The Chef has created a delightful menu. I had a hard time deciding what to eat, but my entree choice - the sea bass - was delicious and the pork belly appetizer..... fabulous!

From the Manager Ray Wang, to the excellent server, Eddie, our evening was perfect! Be sure and make reservations ahead and request a window view. You will see the best of the Bund lit up for your enjoyment. Give yourself time to enjoy the atmosphere of the Cathay Room. We were celebrating an Anniversary, and it was an ideal location for a quiet evening for 2. We ordered the Sweet Potato Soup, fresh and creamy. We enjoyed the Black Cod and Roasted Australian Beef Tenderloin. Both prepared to perfection. If you go, say hello to the Manager Ray and request Eddie as your server.
