My husband and I had an interior twin room with private bathroom. It had no window which we prefer in a busy noisy city. We slept well due to the quiet location. It was very clean, very quiet and the beds were comfortable. The front desk staff were helpful providing information about restaurants. The location was excellent, close to metro, tourist sites and shopping. I would stay here again.
We stayed there for 4 nights at this hostel, very good location, rooms are clean and friendly staff, downsides are internet connection, which cannot be used at all because of it's speed and some noise from corridor.
I stayed here with a group so I was able to see many different types of ensuite rooms. Some of the rooms especially the ones that are like lofts are really nice and have a balcony/terrace. Other rooms in the interior of the building don't have windows and feel like closets. They are all differently shaped rooms. I saw on that had 4 bed in 2 bunks and there was barely enough room for suitcases/bags for 4 people. There should've only been 2 bed in there. I had a room that faced the pool table and it was loud until all hours of the night. Basically when everyone stops drinking and smoking out on that terrace it gets quiet. The communal bathroom is also located by the pool table so there is a lot of traffic there. The bathrooms all look the same and look prefabricated to fit the space. Think of it as an airplane lavatory with a shower head. This place has cats so beware if you are allergic to cats like I am. I also saw a mouse in the common area, so maybe that's why they have cats.
The wifi and computer situation is a joke. It is only reliable in the morning when people aren't using up the bandwidth. At night it took me over 90 minutes to send one email message because my ipad kept timing out because of the unreliable connection. They have a few computer terminals but they aren't that much better. It was beyond frustrating. The drinks aren't particularly cheap but there is a convenience store across the street that is cheaper. I never ordered the breakfast because they wouldn't have been able to accomodate our group.
I do have to admit that the location is very good. It is a 3 or 4 block walk to the metro stop which has a lot of eateries near it including a 85 degree C bakery, which I love.
Clean and comfortable. Don't go expecting a whole lot and you'll have a good stay.
We stated at both BM Bund and also BM Luban. Both BM hostels are great, clean and very friendly places to stay. BM Bund is in a fantastic location, right in the centre of Shanghai with many of the sights within a couple of minutes walking distance. We found BM Luban had a more relaxed atmosphere where is was very easy to meet new people in the bar area. We would definately recommend staying at both the BM hostels
Location is its strongest point - 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the nearest metro station (E. Nanjing Rd). Rooms are falrly clean and functional. Beware that one of the twin private rooms has a HUGE square pillar right smack IN THE MIDDLE of the room. Because of the size of the pillar, the twin room ends up being really tiny and there's not much space to move around (the attached bathroom looks so much more spacious than the room itself, relatively speaking!!).
Service standard is erratic. Some staff are more service-oriented than others so it depends on your luck who's on duty that day (oops). In terms of value for money, I can't say that the private ensuite rooms are worth what you pay for (except for the dorms which are basically quite cheap - like in nearly all hostels anyway). The common sitting/bar area is used for external conferences/presentations on some days so you won't be able to mingle with other travellers at that space during those period.
For better room facilities and services, there are cheaper and better alternatives (ie hotels) further away from the main shopping street.
