I am an enthusiastic amateur cook who was visiting Shanghai for the first time from the United States. I have taken a few cooking classes on trips in various parts of the world.
I enjoyed every minute of my private class at The Kitchen At. The afternoon began with a stop at a local market--the bottom floor, meats and fish (live eels and chickens, plus an incredible range of other choices); the top floor, fruits and vegetables--who knew that there were five kinds of bok choi? Miranda, one of the owners of The Kitchen At, was our guide--she is a delight to be around, encouraging me to ask questions and to find out the names for the fruits/vegetables I was not familiar with.
Then off to the cooking school--down a lane, into a converted ground-floor apartment. The facility is slick and beautiful, and gave me and Chef Alex plenty of room to cook. (It would easily handle a group.)
Miranda (acting as interpreter and narrator) and the Chef were charming and good-natured. The class is hands on; their instruction was clear and the techniques they taught were sophisticated. We made two dishes, both of which were delicious.
Even if you are not a serious cook, I would recommend an afternoon at The Kitchen At--it was a wonderful way to experience Shanghai from a different perspective.

This is a fully and very nicely equipped teaching kitchen tucked into the French Concession area of Shanghai. It's every bit as nicely equipped and clean as any cooking school I've been to in Los Angeles.
I already knew a lot about Chinese cooking so I amped up the difficulty of the dishes we cooked and wasn't disappointed.
Chef Alan is awesome and Miranda, the owner and interpretor, is lovely.
It's an awesome way to spend a morning in Shanghai. If you're a Chinese foodie, don't miss it!

clear instructions, helpful translator and great hands-on experience. you get to eat the dish in the dining room with your classmates after the class, fresh!
i am ethnically shanghai but was born and raised in hk. i joined the cooking class for the shanghai dishes: marinated fish and sliced dry tofu in chicken soup. the taste of the dishes was almost the same as the ones my grandma and aunt used to make. i feel so happy revisiting my memories. and i realized how great my grandma and mom are, having to prepare these difficult dishes while we all took it for granted.
lovely experience!!! i will definitely take another class the next time i visit shanghai!!!
