Hotel Nikko Shanghai
Ranked #1,339 of 5,222 Hotels in Shanghai
Reviewed July 3, 2012

Nikko is a Japanese chain hotel, located in Puxi.

Location:
Not very central, far from subway station and right next to a major highway.
Taxis are easy to obtain as there is a major arterial road just outside the hotel.

Rooms:
Room is ok, clean, fairly average size.
Nice size bathroom.
The in-room coffee is low quality compared to other hotels.

The initial room that I was provided was extremely noisy due to the room facing the highway.
The constant drone of vehicles was too much and went on through the night.
Had to ask for a change of room.

Service:
Service was not that good.
On check-in in the afternoon, was told that no non-smoking room was available.
Had to wait in the business lounge for almost 2 hours.

On the last day, one of the bathrobes in the room went missing(after the room had been cleaned) so I had to tell the front desk about it, in case they thought I stole the bathrobe.
Not sure if the Japanese receptionist fully understood what I told him.

Internet in-room was not free.
Free wireless in the lobby though.

Overall:
Not sure if I would stay there again, given the location(far from subway), chance of noisy room and service.

Room Tip: Get a room that does not face the highway.

+ Nice and quite stylish rooms...
- ..that should have been cleaned better. Carpet had stains (well, they often do) and windows were full of handprints.

+ Generally good service at the front desk and from the bell boys.

+ Nice and well equipped gym. Did not try the spa. The (indoor) pool looked nice.

Did not try any the restaurants, except for one order from room service. The food was ok, but it was pesto pasta, so cannot really judge based on that :) Minor thing, but there was no butter (with bread) or salt, pepper or parmesan for the pasta.

The Jing An location is nice. Shanghai is such a big city you are bound to move around if you want to see anything, but Jing An is quite centrally located: Hengshan Road (restaurants, bars, French Concession), Nanjing Road (shopping), People's Park, HuaiHai ROad & XinTianDi are all quite close.
- Nearest metro station is about half a kilometer from the hotel.

One night, our neihgbour was keeping us awake. His TV was really loud. We ended up calling the front desk at 2am, and their response was: "But they are guests." Mmm, so are we, and isn't it one of the main purposes of a hotel to provide a place to sleep? I asked them to call the noisy neighbour anyway, and they said they would try. The noise stopped, so it ended well, but that is not a response you would expect anywhere else in the world from 5 star hotel reception, is it ;)

All in all: I could very well stay again!

I have stayed at the Hotel Nikko Shanghai on numerous occassions over the past two years. I've also stayed at many other top hotels in Shanghai that cost 2-3 times the money. If I have a choice, this is by far and away my preferred place to stay. The hotel is very well located in Jing'an, and everything from the design of the rooms to the food and the service is first class. A few months ago, I stayed with a colleague and we decided to eat the evening buffet. After eating the dining room, he said 'This will be fun, there's very little choice'. After half an hour, he said, 'very little choice, but what there is, is fantastic'. I think that sums this hotel up. It doesn't scream and shout at you. Everything is so subtle, and so sublime that this hotel could easily be dismissed. It doesn't have a fleet of Rolls Royce and Supercars parked outside the front door, it doesn't appear to be the chosen destination of Chinese and Asian film stars and celebrities, but it does tend to attract the same customers time and again. The rooms are beautifully designed, and a personal favourite of mine, and the beds and bedding are wonderful. The restaurants in the hotel are very good, and so is the pool and gym- Whenever I am there, I seem to be the only guest interested in these kind of facilities. I cannot say enough good about this hotel, and i cannot think of anything negative enough to write in a review. My advice is to try it, and you'll come away smiling, because you will miss nothing that you get at the hotels that charge US$400-600 a night, and you'll soon find yourself wanting to come back for more.

I stayed this week at the Nikko. Got a beautiful big room on the 23rd floor with a view on Shanghai's Skyline.
The personnel was very welcoming and the breakfast is fantastic: nice selection of Japanese, Chinese and Western food. The Executive Lounge is beautiful but unfortunately most of the time deserted. You can get breakfast, happy hour and some sort of dinner (free of charge) as well as some drinks and water...but frankly the breakfast selection is much nicer in the normal breakfast room.
With the Executive Room one gets a whole package of free stuff, including a 15 minutes back massage, which was very welcome after a long walk through the city. The masseuse was a very strong woman. The massage hurt but then my muscles were really cramped and afterwards I felt reborn. I used the fitnessroom, it was quite nice. The swimming pool was beautiful with an outside terasse with a recliner...very nice.
Taxis were fast to be had.
I will definitely stay there again (unless I have business in a completely different part of town...as this city is absolutely huge)

Room Tip: If you get the Executive Room, you get a nice package and the cost is not significantly more.

This hotel is the outpost of the Nikko brand in Shanghai. It is quite convenient in location for cabs throughout the city. However, it's not very close to the subways, the closest station is Jiang Su Rd (江苏路站) which is at least 15-20 minute walk.

The rooms are attractive, modern, spacious and well appointed. The bathroom has the usual Japanese multifunction toilet as well as a cool electronic curtain blocking view of the shower from the room with a flip of switch.

Service is good and everyone seems very friendly.

Wifi was just implemented in the lobby during my stay, but not all the employees were aware of it. Having no wifi in the room is a bit of a pain if you have a Macbook Air. My room did have an ethernet connector.

An excellent modern hotel with very professional and courteous staff. Rooms are spacious and set to five star standards. Absence of Wifi is a pain - though available in the Executive lounge. It suffers from being at a junction with busy roads and going out for a walk if you are not with a local - crossing a road as a pedestrian could be lethal.
