“Good choice in Shanghai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 24, 2012

This hotel is the outpost of the Nikko brand in Shanghai. It is quite convenient in location for cabs throughout the city. However, it's not very close to the subways, the closest station is Jiang Su Rd (江苏路站) which is at least 15-20 minute walk.

The rooms are attractive, modern, spacious and well appointed. The bathroom has the usual Japanese multifunction toilet as well as a cool electronic curtain blocking view of the shower from the room with a flip of switch.

Service is good and everyone seems very friendly.

Wifi was just implemented in the lobby during my stay, but not all the employees were aware of it. Having no wifi in the room is a bit of a pain if you have a Macbook Air. My room did have an ethernet connector.

An excellent modern hotel with very professional and courteous staff. Rooms are spacious and set to five star standards. Absence of Wifi is a pain - though available in the Executive lounge. It suffers from being at a junction with busy roads and going out for a walk if you are not with a local - crossing a road as a pedestrian could be lethal.

Stayed there for 3 nights before Chinese New Year. I got there from Pudong Airport at midnight by taxi (seemed the only way to get there at the time. Bus only went to Jingan Temple). The guard was helpful with my luggage. Check-in was of course fast enough.

The room was new with modern design, which is quite different from Sheraton style. TV and ipod dock were both Sony, matching with its Japanese brand. The king bed was made by 2 smaller beds but it felt alright. No complaint.

The washroom was acceptable. While everything was just in its place, with some bonuses like washlet toilet, TV in front of the tub and electronic shade glass, the size of everything was quite small, compared to its American / French counterparts in China. It was totally accepted in Japan due to land shortage but, hmm, for China, it was a bit small.

The restaurant offered 50% discount for buffet dinner after 8pm so I gave it a try as there was not much to eat before Chinese New Year. Many people went home. I was the only customer apart from another table of Japanese guests. The buffet was awful - it had everything you expected there - sashimi , oyster, ham, fried rice, but they were definitely not fresh to the standard that to be put on the table. I am not sure whether it was the low season so they could not arrange for better quality dishes or it was always the case.

The gym was good. I tried treadmill and they had everything you expected.

For the location, it was located near Jiangsu Lu metro station around 10-min walk. And I happened to find Jingan Temple was within walking distance, around 15 min walk (I should have taken the bus then. The taxi costed me >200RMB!!!). So it should not be any problem to get around. But there was no attendants at the entrance, except a guard directing traffic. Very weird to a 5-star hotel.

Apparently the service was not the focus of this hotel. Especially when you compared to Shangri-la and those American brands. I requested late checkout until 3pm and they said no problem. But when I tried to open the room door at around 2pm after going out for a walk, i failed to open it. Then I went down to front desk to seek for help, they said generally late checkout was until 2pm. I expected a "sorry" but I was disappointed. Not a good ending for this stay.

In short, the hotel was very new, conveniently-located at metro station, with many room amenity gadgets. It's ok if you want these. But if you want a warm atmosphere like you are always attended to, try another one. There are plenty of those in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Try to request rooms away from highway. Less noisy despite of the sound-proof glass.

How comes that a new hotel does not have wifi connection exept from the executive floor? Moreover the executive lounge closes at 11pm.
Western breakfast is good but limited in variety.
Staff is nice but slow, their English is a bit poor. Due to the entrance of the hotel respect to the street taxi are few,so you might wait more than 10 minutes for it.
Fitness centre with Technogym machines and pool.

I stayed at this hotel in two rooms, with my family in August. Previously I had stayed the odd night for business, and I'd been very impressed by this hotel. Our stay was no different, the rooms are well designed, very nicely furnished, exceptionally clean, and everything works the way it should. The bed and linen are of a very good quality. A good night's sleep in this hotel is easy to achieve. The staff are very pleasant, and on the whole, by standards in China, they are eager to meet your requirements, however small. The Pool and Gym are also very nice, and again spotlessly clean. I often find that in China, the summers are too hot, and the air conditioning in hotels, doesn't always work as well as it should. This hotel is different in so far as I've never been too hot, or too cold in winter. If there's a drawback, I suppose there's nothing grand about the lobby, and the hotel can at times seem a little unwelcoming, as there are times when it's hard to find someone to help with luggage and taxis. If you don't mind walking, it's just five minutes walk from some very nice shopping and eating places in Jing'an. In my opinion, it ranks in the top 10 hotels that I've stayed in, in Shanghai, and it's relatively inexpensive too. I hope they keep up the good work.

This should be a terrific hotel. Rooms are comfortable and well fitted-out. Gym and spa facilities are good. Comfortable beds and good linen. So what went wrong?

Well, let's start with the gym. It closes at 10.30pm, so I rocked up at 10.00pm, wanting a quick swim before bed. But you need a key to use a locker, and you need an attendant to give you a key. So I waited. And waited. And waited. And finally at 10.20pm, a surly young guy saunters out from behind a door somewhere, and said "gym's closed". When I protested that it wasn't yet 10.30, he at least had the good grace to apologise.

Oh, hang on. No he didn't. He looked me up and down and shrugged and said "closed" in a slightly louder voice (in case I had trouble understanding the meaning of the word) and I returned to my room in a white-hot fury. Whereby I thought i'd order some room service. So I dialled the number - no answer - and then rang Reception to ask if they'd put me through. Deep sighs from the receptionist. And when I finally got through, there was only one dish out of fifteen available. One out of fifteen. But at least she was apologetic.

Oh, hang on. No she wasn't. She hung up in my ear, and I went to bed with a packet of crisps from the mini-bar. Seething by this time, but I needed sleep because I had some important meetings the following morning. And Shanghai's traffic can be awful in morning peak hour, so it was just as well the staff arranged the cab I asked for. And it was there waiting for me promptly, and the staff were very helpful.

Oh, hang on. No it wasn't. And no they weren't. It turned up 20 minutes late, and when I asked the guy why it was late, he actually launched into a tirade at me about how cabs can't be relied on because they're out on the streets picking up passengers and are very busy. Which is fine; I get how cabs work. But it's a bit rich accepting a "booking" for a cab without at least explaining to the guest that the concept of "booking" is really pretty meaningless, and that it's a total crapshoot when the cab turns up. It's also pretty damn rich to shout at the customer when they try and make this point.

So... will I return? No, I won't. I won't reward such bad behaviour by continuing to patronise the place. There are plenty of better-located hotels in Shanghai and I'll try any and all of them before my shadow will fall over the Nikko's door again.

Room Tip: rooms are clean and well-appointed
