Owner description: Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town also known as the "pearl stream." Best known for its bridges, built during Ming and Qing Dynasties, the various spans are built of wood, marble and stone.

The contrast between the new towns being built and settled nearby was extreme. The original buildings of this water town are very interesting and it is enjoyable to see it from a "gondola". However the dozens of cheap tourist shops rather spoiled it, with vendors constantly nagging for business. My guide also warned me not to eat the local restaurant food as they wash the cooking dishes in the canals!

The Hilton arranged for us to take a taxi to the tourist bus station and hop on the bus to the city of canals. It was fun meandering the streets along the water, taking a boat ride, doing some shopping. The not to miss is the temple and gardens we relaxed for an hour on the benches near the koi farm before heading back to the bus stop. The bus was prompt leaving Shanghai and returning.

Zhujiajiao is only 1 hour away from Shanghai, 2 best ways to go is either bus from downtown (google "pink bus to Zhujiajiao for details) or more costly, metro to Hongqiao station => then taxi (a bit more than RMB 100 if my memory is good)
It is SOOOO crowded during the weekend, so my best piece of advice is to go on an evening in the week. If you arrive there at around 5 PM, you avoid the heavy traffic, and all tourists have long gone already. Pick up a nice guesthouse (I warmly recommend "West Well", just in front of the river), and then wander by the small streets near the river, with the beautiful traditional lanterns. You can do a short "cruise" on the river, Venezia-style gondola, or enjoy a beer in one of the nice bars near West Well, or sample some of the delicious local meals such as "Zongzi" or river shrimps. West well also has an AMAZING list of imported beers and great French wines at a decent price.
Then leave before the big tourist rush the next morning!

Zhijiajiao is a water town located about an hours bus ride from Shanghai City.It can be a one day trip on it's own.
I took the Hu Zhu Express Bus from the bus terminal near Ren Min Guang Chang. Zhujiajiao is the terminal stop. It is 12 RMB one way. The actual location is another 10 -15 mins walk away from Zhu Jia Jiao bus terminal. There is not many sign but you can generally follow the crowd.

I find it very similar to Zhou Zhuang in Suzhou. There is a garden (Ke Zhi Yuan) within the town and lots of cafe and tea houses along the way. It is a good walkabout place and take the boat ride that bring you aroud the town. Do try the rice dumpling sold within the town.
Overall it is a good place to visit if you have not been to a watertown in China. For those who have visited other watertowns before Zhujiajiao is nothing special.

We had a fantastic 4 night tour we booked over the internet from home through Beijing Holiday.com, she (Jenny Wong) was so good we got her to do the booking for us in Shanghai also. Itineraries built to our likes. So we had the luxury of having a driver, his car and an English speaking guide for the duration of our trips, not to mention translator, they were fantastic. I still dont know how they made any money though. Anyway, by doing it this way we didnt have the hassle of buses, time tables or even other travellers. If we liked where we were we stayed as long as we liked, within reason, if we didnt we moved on and we liked Zhujiajiao very much. some reviews mentioned how dirty it was, I really didnt think it was, but I have been to New York, that was dirty, lovely, but dirty. We shopped, I bought some lovely silk scarves, etc etc. We had a banquet lunch (included) went on a Gondola ride (included) and generally had a lovely day. We then met up with the driver and he drove us back to our hotel. What a great day we had.
