“Hip Hotel, Good location”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

This hotel is in a great spot by the river, a little tricky to find. It affords nice views of the city from the top terrace and it’s part of the Cool Docks area.
Its design is very modern and peculiar, it’s got a lovely quirky / funky / hip ambiance.
Breakfast is divine – porridge and croissants are scrumptious.
They have an Illy cafe machine in the room which is handy and free of charge. They provide L’Occitane amenities in the room.
Room itself was not bad but it lacked privacy – the dark glasses in the shower and toilet do not really do the deed. It’s okay you’re travelling with someone you know well or your partner. The room is not huge and if you have a lot of luggage you probably don’t want to choose a standard room.
The staff speak English quite well which in China seems to be an exception in hotels.
I would stay here again, we really enjoyed it.

Anyone with an appreciation for architecture and design will appreciate this stunning hotel. Set within an old Japanese warehouse, Designers Neri&Hu have created a richly textured interior which juxtaposes raw brickwork and steel with timber, glass and smooth plasterboard. Peppered with exquisite danish furniture and delightful light fixtures, the Waterhouse offered a trans-formative experience: exceptional service coupled with site specific design excellence. The planted roof terrace bar is highly recommended for its wonderful views over the river and there is a bustling street market nearby for a taste of old Shanghai.

Good location - although difficult to get to in a taxi without the address (there are no major landmarks nearby). Largely our problem as we didn't take a business card of the hotel with us. Great interior, friendly staff, good breakfast, very comfortable rooms, great view over the Bund & river. Would definitely recommend.

Was very excited to stay at the WaterHouse.
The design of the hotel is modern industrial chic ... with nice touches of retro and modern furniture.
Layout of room was great, but basic.
Only disappointment was service. In fact all touch points with the staff and customer was a disappointment. Check In. Room Service. Concierge. Lobby Bar. At all times i was made to feel that i was interrupting the staff who looked bored. This left a negative lasting impression with me.
On a positive note. The service at Table # 1 was fab. as was the food.
So hotel management. Spend some energy and time in staff service training.

First impressions matter. A lot. This hotel gives the impression of being a funky design enclave in shanghai but don't be fooled. Despite the good location (opposite the beach on the bund) and spring a great roof top bar there are a lot better and funnier places to stay in shanghai.

So first impressions. Arrive. Two rooms booked. One room actually reserved. No great shakes and to be expected from time to time. Well recovered but no apology or apparent concern at the mistake. The room. Clean. Clinical. Polished concrete and wood. Nice. But dirty. All the white goods surfaces marked with cup stains and the cigarette Burns to the wooden balustrade show the room needs a refurbished. Designer furniture collection as advertised - perhaps but suspect a lot of it was made on guangdong rather than Milan. Again no great shakes but if you advertise it, live it. Dinner reservations. Right restaurant. Wrong location. Wrong time and wrong number of diners.

Real issue with this hotel. Some places give service where nothing is too much trouble. Here everything was too much trouble. We wanted the address for yangs dumplings (go go go as it it amazing). The look on the receptionist girls face would suggest I had asked her to eat her children. After all I had disturbed her from playing on her iphone. In the end she wrote down the address for the wrong place.

Value for money. 150+ per night. Not really. There are much cooler and funnier places to stay in Shangai and at a much cheaper rate. Besides if I want to stay in a place clinically surrounded by designer brands I will fall asleep in Harrods

This hotel might be a little off the beaten path (it's about a 15 minute walk to the south end of the Bund), but it's well worth the trek. The common areas and rooms are absolutely gorgeous and very well appointed—in-room espresso machine, soaking tub, and daily snack, for starters—and the restaurant is *excellent*. The daily breakfast, included in the room rate, is an a la carte affair with outstanding coffee. I would totally stay there again!

The Waterhouse at South Bund started life as a warehouse on the docks of Shanghai in the South Bund area.

It's a funky boutique hotel that will surprise. From the outside it looks like a rundown warehouse but once you step through the doors you'll walk on the paved lobby floor and you'll see the exposed concrete walls. The rooms are a mixture of eclectic east meets west and old and new.

The rooftop bar is a great place to unwind, have a drink and enjoy the views. There are several bars and restaurants nearby.

The hotel is a little out of the way so you'll need to grab a taxi (10 mins depending on traffic) to get to the main area of the Bund.

The staff are very attentive eg. when I arrived my room wasn't ready but the staff allowed me to use another room to have a shower and get changed until my room was ready.
