Nice location but the staff don't speak proper English and almost felt like they're doing you a favor by assiting....but to be fair this was also felt at the St. Regis in Beijing so this may be a cultural issue. Avoid staying on the 10th floor as it smelled like smog. Room sizes were on the larger side and the food was good.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback from your recent stay. One of the cornerstones of the Waldorf Astoria experience is unparalleled service, and to ensure that our guest experience remains at the level we expect, we have undertaken additional training exercises to improve our English and service. We appreciate you alerting us to this issue, and we hope you will give our hotel a second chance if you return to Shanghai.

We stayed at the WA on the end of 10 day cruise. (June 18-20th) Had we stayed in this hotel at the beginning of our trip, we probably would have missed the cruise. The rooms were amazing! We had a River View room and the view was breathtaking. Looking at the Shanghai skyline at night was absolutely beautiful. The beds were so comfortable it was hard to get up. We ate breakfast at the restaurant downstairs, the food was delicious, the variety was fantastic. The service, the staff was the best I can only say if this is what the Waldorf is all about I will definitely be staying in a Waldorf Astoria again. I have never written a review about anything but I was so impressed with this hotel, i just had to say something about it.

Room Tip: You must request a River View Room.

We lived in China for 5-6 years, and when we finally decided to move to Denmark, we decided to spend our last night in this hotel. The location was perfect by the bund, the entrance was a bit confusing because we thought we just drove by the front of the bund, and I guessed they asked our driver to drive to the other side with our luggages. When we got into the room, wow impressive! Big comfy bed, some seating area by the window with nice view of the bund, big bathroom with separate small room for toilet and shower, with a screen behind the mirror, which we can listen to the music or even watch tv, which was one of the coolest amenity in this hotel. The room also have a small coat room where we can hang our jackets and keep all our suitcases. Everything about the room was perfect and in a very good quality.
The breakfast was also extraordinary, not the normal type of hotel buffet breakfast. Yes, we took salads, breads, and drinks by the buffet, but the 'main course' we chose from the menu card (omelletes, egg benedicts, waffles, and some Chinese dishes) and the chef prepared them just for us and delivered to our table in a very nice plating.
We also got a complimentary champagne in their Long Bar, it was nice and cozy place to relax. So overall, we love this hotel, and it was the perfect last night in China for us, hopefully one day we can visit again!

I have spent the last 10 years traveling China and the world with my husband who works in Beijing. I am in week 3 of a china trip. On the whole, the Chinese still do not understand the concept of service nor comfort. WA Shanghai shatters that perception with service par excellence. The rooms are opulent and spotless. The restaurants are excellent. The Long Bar Lounge is a must see. The location cannot be beaten even by a stay in the French Concession. But what truly sets this WA apart is the staff. Superb service, English speaking staff who actually take pride in their hotel - a rarity in China. Have just finished stays in Conrad Hong Kong, Conrad Sanya, Shangri La Hong Kong and St Regis Beijing. Will review all but had to start with the best.

Room Tip: Bund/river view is worth every penny. If you can swing a suite you'll never go home.

After considerable debate over where we should stay during a three night stopover in Shanghai (June 2, 3 and 4), my husband and I finally settled on the Waldorf Astoria and we could not have been more delighted with our choice. From the very beginning, the hotel staff welcomed us with gracious hospitality. Knowing that we were celebrating our anniversary while visiting, they upgraded the standard room we had initially booked to a room on the 19th Floor (1910) overlooking the Hangpu River and the spectacular skyscape of towering buildings of Pudong. What a feast for the eyes. And that first warm gesture set the tone for the rest of our stay. From beginning to end, the Waldorf team (from the door greeters, to the bellhops, to reception, to concierge, to housekeeping, to the restaurant staff who doted on us each morning as we indulged in the delectable spread of buffet samplings, to bartending service at the Long Bar, to the poolside attendants who kept the facilities immaculate) provided impeccable service and went out of their way to tend to our every need and whim. In terms of the hotel property itself, we could not have asked for more. The architecture, décor, and overall ambience exuded old world sophistication and charm, while the room amenities offered modern and innovative technologies, including free Wifi, a bedside alarm clock that served as control centre for the room (allowing you to draw the drapes, switch off the lights, or request room service all with a touch of a button), a bathroom mirror that also served as television (had never seen anything like that before), along with many other unexpected and clever gadgets and contraptions. In terms of location, the hotel is perfectly situated, just a short walking distance to key attractions (including Yu Gardens, East Nanjing Street (shopper’s paradise), People’s Square (for those interested in making use of the subway) and of course, just across the street from the world famous bund boardwalk where you can enjoy long leisurely evening strolls as we did, enthralled and mesmerized by the showcase of lights and glitter of the Oriental Pearl and the other incredible canopy of towers seen in postcards and movies. This was truly a first rate experience (in fact our very best hotel experience EVER) and one that will be logged permanently into our memory banks. If you are considering where to stay while in Shanghai, look no further. The Waldorf Astoria offers high end, luxurious accommodation and incomparable service.

Room Tip: Try out a river view room. Room 1910 was spectacular.

I have stayed in Ritz Carlton's , Four Seasons, and Raffles Resorts, to name a few. Nothing compares to the Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai!

The rooms are luxurious. The bedding is second to none. The bathrooms are a statement of pampering.

The location is on the Bund so shopping and restaurants are within walking distance.

The staff were the best we had during our 3 weeks in China.

Put this on your must- do location !!!!

The Waldorf Astoria has an excellent location on the Bund. Even before we arrived, we received several e-mails welcoming us and asking if we needed assistance from the airport. The service at the front desk was just outstanding. As HiltonHonors members, we were upgraded to a high floor in the tower building with a magnificent view of the Huangpu River and Pudong District in the distance. The room was spacious and luxurious; the bathroom was arrayed with first class amenities and the stand-alone shower was wonderful. It was a high-tech bathroom... The included buffet breakfast was world-class. The eggs and dumpling soups were made to order and were just amazing in quality and the ingredients were tasty. The service in the restaurant was just excellent. The architecture of the legacy building is interesting and the Long Bar was an experience. The exercise facilities were excellent; the equipment in the excercise room were great and the room was kept neat and clean and stocked well with towels and water. The pool was magnificent and a joy to be in. Even the locker and changing rooms were great. The showers were wonderfully maintained and the amenities were plentiful. The hotel is very convenient to the sights along the Bund; the Metro is a little walk, but not far; it was easy to get around and see the sights. Be sure to visit the China Art Museum (former Expo site) and enjoy the "River of Wisdom" -- an experience in art that is amazing. Also, don't miss Xitiandi, a very interesting area of old and new Shanghai. If Suzhou is too far, you can get a taste of an ancient watertown by visiting Qibao, conveniently reached by the Metro. Four nights in Shanghai were all too short. Even after we left Shanghai, we received e-mail from the concierge asking about our stay. The attention you get from the Waldorf Astoria on the Bund sets the standard for others to follow.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor and facing the river.
