The old entrance is impressive- friendly porter, nice iron gate and pleasant greeter at the door. We are taken to the new section of the building, which is still tastefully decorated. Checking-in was done in the room itself, and the room itself with a gorgeous view of the bund, complimentary cookies and Nespresso, lovely bathroom,... make the whole experience wonderful.

Nonetheless, a few lowlights.. First of all, the place is rather empty, so it feels a little lacking in energy. We went to Pelham's for dinner but were told that Chef Brian Chan from Waldorf New York was now at the Grand Brasserie. We ended up at the Grand Brasserie for dinner, but the meal was nothing to write home about... It was simply not worth the money we paid.. Then, we went for drinks at the Long Bar, which is in the historical part of the building. The manager asked us to sit in a 2 or 4 seater even though the place was practically empty, and we wanted to have a cozier sofa seating. Hm.. Why not indulge us when you have no guests?

Moving on, they can play better music - why play elevator music for such a beautiful setting? Also, on the interior decor, the chandeliers are impressive, but the gate at the new building (on Sichuan Road) was disappointing - one could just rip off the decorative motifs, not what you expect when you see the other gates that are so intricately crafted in iron.. Lastly, they locked us out after the first night, so we had to call for another key. Not how one might wish to impress guests.......

On the whole, I would still stay here again, but hope they can work on the areas above..then, we can all truly savour the Great Gatsby experience......

I spent five nights in the hotel with my husband in october this year.

It was a great stay -- receptionist/bell boys were all very helpful and nice.

We stayed in a bund view room which offered a great view of PuDong. That was a highlight.

The room itself is beautiful especially the bathroom, where a TV is embedded in the mirror and offered crystal clear reflection at the same time.

The hotel provided the best available amenities.

There was only one hic-up: As I booked through Amex, we were given 100 American dollars worth of voucher on food and beverage ( which was great) . We spent most of it in the long bar. The service was a slight disappointment. Upon leaving the bar, a female waitress chased us asking us if we have settled the bill. We, of course, had settled the bill but were not impressed by the encounter.

Room tip: Bund view is great and you need a high level as the hotel guest rooms (new part) is set away from the bund.

We just returned from our several day stay at this amazing hotel. Every single experience that we had was so impressive. From our arrival in the main lobby and every day in between, we were constantly impressed. Sam, our bell man was so helpful. Christine, our personal assistant met all of our needs and Raymond in the restaurant greeted us daily and helped us plan our day. The hotel is impeccably decorated, new, and spotless. I stay in hotels for business weekly and I have never been more pleased with a hotel stay ever! Get a river view room...although most of our days were overcast, the view at night is awesome! Can't wait to return!

Room tip: Get a river view in the Towers!

Needed a place for one night before we left for a 10 day trip to Yunnan. Redeemed points and chose this property. Couldn't have been more delighted, room was spacious, bath even more so. Bed was divine, wish I had one like it at home! Breakfast buffet was extensive and they were pouring Veuve Cliquot. My husband used the gym and said it was great. Agree with over reviewers, this property gives the other five stars a run for the money.

Room tip: High floor
