Convenient as near Central Rail Station & also MRT stations.
Comfortable & cosy lobby with friendly bar services.
Rooms project warm feeling, spoilt by bad glaring toilet lighting.
Very attentive personnel from front desk to bar services, conceirge etc.
Will return for next business visit.

Executive floor lounge is very nice and provides an excellent location to relax after a long day. Breakfast selections are good and so are the evening snacks in the Executive lounge. Most all of the staff, especially the Executive lounge attendants, are very responsive, friendly and caring about your satisfaction.

Waiting for a taxi in the morning is a real pain, as well as the elevators if you are on a higher floor. Late at night, the outside bellmen are more concerned with getting tips from the patrons of the very exclusive KTV club on the 2nd floor than welcoming late arrival guests. I had to yell to get them to pay attention even after they noticed me getting out of my taxi with my luggage. Don't even think of getting into the KTV club if you do not look like you have the money to be there.

This place is awful. The first room they gave me had no windows. I opened the curtain and found myself staring at a concrete slab. This was a cell that they passed off as a room. When I called to complain they said I could change that night. Things deteriorated from there. The internet connection wouldn't work so they sent the cleaning lady to fix it. Besides checking the connecting cable she was clueless and I was without email. When I asked to use the business center I was turned away because they were using it to run the front desk. Generally the attitude of the people who worked there was dismal and totally unhelpful.I tried the breakfast and the food was acceptable but far more expensive than similar meals in Shanghai at better hotels. The concierge was the only functional area of the hotel. I think that there are far better options in Shanghai

The hotel's good location and spacious room unfortunately did not make up for the lingering smell of smoke throughout (and hey I know China is full of smokers), nor the oppressive heat in my room (never below 26 deg C on the room thermostat). After numerous visits from housekeeping without success I finally got the true story - the cold air-con reverts to heat at the end of summer in spite of the actual temperature outside. You can open the small bathroom and bedroom windows but the traffic noise is relentless. On a positive note the staff are friendly and try really hard to please with faltering English.

The Grand Mercure was fantastic. Any negative comments from other reviews seem nitpicky in retrospect - especially with regards to the breakfast (we thought it was outstanding.) The rooms are very comfortable, and here's the big reason to book here: the beds are SOFT Western beds!! Oh, a comfortable few nights when the rest of the trip was on hard Chinese beds.. this is rare even at the nice hotels throughout China. Also, you are literally steps from the subway, so the convenience is hard to match.

The comments on the showers not draining well is true, but we learned just to turn the water pressure down about halfway, and we had no problems. Otherwise, the rooms are very stylish and comfortable, the staff helpful, one even walked my travelmate across the street to show him where to buy new glasses when his broke.

Highly recommended.
