“Soho International Youth Hostel”
Reviewed December 30, 2011

I have been in China for two and a half years and hence have seen my share of hostels so trust me when I say that Shanghai SOHO International Youth Hostel is:

A truly amazing place! The staff are great, which naturally makes a lot of difference, but also the place has great interior design comprising of parts and levels of the hostel dedicated to different activities (such as a reading loft, etc.). Some of the rooms don't have windows but you can ask for one that does when arranging your stay. I love the fact that the rooms have carpets and CENTRAL HEATING/AIR! Especially the latter is not easily found in that part of China. Great food, great drinks, free hot water for tea and noodles 24/7, no curfew, smoking areas, free wifi EVERYWHERE..this place really does have it all.

And last but definitely not the least...they are pet friendly so if you are like me and like to travel with your fluff then this place should be your choice...there is a nice pedestrian-only area right outside (ignore the scooters and bikes - those are just a given anywhere in China) the hostel and it's right by the Suzhou Creek. My fluff and I were able to spend hours walking around central Shanghai from there as it is about a 10 minute walk from People's square.

Nice location. Close to the railway station which is just one station away from the People Square. Convenient while stay away from the crowd. Taxi can't stop in front of the door but it is just a minute walk.

Good decoration. Located in a traditional Shanghai building. Enough common area for meeting other travelers.

Have basic facilities for travelers. Such as common area with wi-fi, one PC connected to internet with printer, a laundry room. Can play billiards, darts and different board games in the bar room. But can't watch TV there at mid night.

Postcard friendly. They sell stamps and have a mail box.

Not the cheapest choices but the price is reasonable.

Book early. Not much room left when I booked it 7 days before arrival.

This place is easy to find and it puts you right in the vicinity of locals. You can even take a leisurely walk all the way from people's square. The rooms are old but the place has character. Basic room's bed is big enough for three people (Asians) to squeeze in. I dislike the carpeted floor inside the room because the bathroom water seem to seep out to the carpet. The bed is hard as well. With those in mind, I find this place really worth booking. There are yummy breakfast places nearby as you walk to the xinzha mrt station and there is a bonus of a park right beside the hostel. Artsy, and worth it.

Staff are friendly and generally helpful. Its a nice place to chill and lay back. The underground train is excellent if somewhat busy, and the hostel is in good striking distance of the city. There is a nice park next to the hostel for a walk or taking your lunch. The river/canal is across the road and makes for a nice walk down to the local shops that are only 5-0 minutes away. Here you can buy fruit and other foodstuff. There is also a McDonalds!!! and also a supermarket. Overall...a great home from home environment. For me, a week is enough. Check it out, I think you will be pleasantly pleased.

Room Tip: Do not choose a room next to any of the corridors as they can be noisey at night. Without a window i...

We had stayed at three different hostels in Shanghai before arriving here. The people here are absolutely amazing! Location is wonderful. Walking distance to Metro and People's Square. We would have stayed forever. We will return to Shanghai soon, and we will go no further than here! -Michael and Deiederik

Stayed in a dorm room. Metro stop nearby, and walking distance to People's Square.
Great staff, they really roll out the red carpet for you. Could stay here indefinitely due to the great rates and friendly staff. Comfy loft hangout to use your computer or read. Never any problem with hot water for showers. Lockers in the room. No complaints.
